------题目------
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
------正文------
The question about who make the decision of the greatness of individuals is raised by the above statement. In my opinion, individual significance and importance, usually referred to as greatness, and evaluated according to their corresponding contributions, varies from people to people, and from time to time. As a result, individual greatness can be decided by either their contemporaries or those who live after them.
First of all, the greatness of individuals is so variable that it cannot be set to a constant value. Even of the same period of time, the evaluation greatness varies from one culture to another, one region to another, and one person to another. A successful General can be considered fairly great by people who are interested in wars and battles, while he will also be regarded of no contribution or even harmful to the society by people who love peace indeed. Similarly, that successful General can be considered very great by his soldiers and countrymen, whereas he will be unavoidably regarded only as a guilty killer or murderer by his adversaries. A king can be considered the most great person by his residents, but he will be regarded no more than a common person in republic societies. As the standards of evaluation are determined by different cultures, regions, and individuals, the greatness of a person can be significantly changeable. Since the differences among cultures, regions, and individuals can never become diminished, people and society are not able to demand that the greatness of individuals will remain constant some day. Thus the decision of the greatness of individuals is a variable according to the characteristics of cultures, regions, and individuals.
Consequently, the greatness of individuals evaluated by contemporaries and people who live after them cannot be replaced by each other, since the significance and importance of them varies from time to time naturally, according to the evolvement of cultures, regions, and human beings. Consider a scientist who discovered or invented something in the past. If his discoveries or inventions cannot be understood or applied by his contemporaries by virtue of some restrictions, then he could not contribute significantly to his contemporary society and therefore could not be considered great. When his discoveries or inventions were gradually understood and well applied, those people who live after him will realize his contribution and offer him high value of greatness. On the other hand, when those discoveries and inventions were replaced by something more advanced, the greatness of that scientist will decline. Hence, following people can only decide the greatness of their ancestors to their currently operating society, while the significance and importance of individuals to their contemporary society must be decided by their contemporaries.
In conclusion, since the decision of individual greatness is a variable based on the characteristics of cultures, regions, and human beings, the evaluation of individual significance and importance varies according to the evolvement of society. Because the significance or importance of individuals evaluated at a certain time cannot be replaced by that of another time, individual greatness can be decided by either their contemporaries or people living after them. |
