The speaker contends that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by people who live after them, not by their contemporaries. While I agree insofar that the achievements and contributions of individuals could obtain more correct and proper evaluation from people who live after them than from their contemporaries, the speaker unfairly generalize the process that we evaluate the greatness of individuals.

  As we all know, the greatness of individuals are mainly decided by their contributions to the development of our society.  Therefore, it would be understandable that the greatness of individuals can be better evaluated by people after them. The reason for this lies in two aspects; first, huge breakthroughs or achievements are always step further than the time and society and subsequently not easy to be understood or recognized by their contemporaries. For example, people recognized the great achievements in Van Gdor's paintings many years after his death. Only very few people could understand Einstain's relative theory when it was first proposed. Thus people who live after them can more properly decide their greatness with their increasing knowledge and experience.

   Second, many great achievement may not be able to expose its potential values or benefits at the first. We can find many such examples in our history. Telephone was regarded as stupid and meaningless when it was invented. The invention of car experienced similar situations too. The idea that earth is not the center of university also received huge irrational opposition in the middle century. Yet these inventions and ideas were regarded as great contributions to the progress of humans and their inventors also received evaluations that they deserved.

  However, though many individuals who have made outstanding achievements obtain proper evaluations from people who live after them, we can find many examples that the greatness of individuals quickly received recognition after they have made great contributions. For example, nobody would doubt about the greatness of Bill Gates, who have make us acquire a new world with useful computers which have greatly improved the quality of our lives. Fort received enormous praises for his effort that had brought people automobiles at acceptable price but with better quality shortly after he began his car company. Though Gates and Fort’s achievements may be exceeded by heroes in the future, people who live with them can undoubtedly decide their greatness for their prominent contributions.

  In sum, it is a natural phenomenon that the greatness of individuals can be more accurately evaluated by people after him as their greatness are often not easy to receive recognition from their contemporaries. Nevertheless, this does not mean that individuals’ greatness can only be decided by people after it, because many individual’s achievements are so outstanding that their greatness will be eternal.
