TOPIC: ISSUE 185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 582 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-6-26
Nowadays, scandals, from Dianna to Cliton, always play a neglective role in daily life. However, it is a effiective way to attract people'a attention on some important things whether in politics, academia or other areas. And it is commly work much more efficient than any speaker or reformer ever could. In spite of this function, I should caution that we cannot drive it too far that will lead us fail to concern mucn more important issues.
In the first place, scandals can work as a effective supervision to monitor the activities of politicians. Take the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, as an example. Since he fibracated a report about the threat about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and caused 103 British troops died in the warfield even the number may increase. British people began to blame Blair for dragging their country into the quagmire. For the loans scandals has damaged his standing. On March 17, Labor acknowledged that it had accepted loans of nearly 25 million dollars from 12 donors during 2005 parliamentary, and 4 of 12 donors were nominated later for seats in the House of lord. When this scandal broke, it appears that these seats were up for sale---an allegation that Blair vehemently denied. According to those, Blair's popularity has sunk to record lows and were asked to resign. Thus, all the British people ask the supervision of government constitution, furthermore this is a case study in the operation of constitution and political values which will affect descendant of Blair a lot.
Even in the academia, scandals still exist as a supervision to test the honesty of scientists. Although the impressions that scientists leave to us are always earnest and industrious, there two scandals still shock the whole world. One is about the Kroea scientist Hwang Woo Suk, who is considered as the leading scientist of stem-cell in the world. He has fabricated the data of his research and never draw the conclusion at all. The other is about "the father of clone sheep"----Ian Wilmut, he has acknowledged in a court case in Edinburgh that he did not develop the technology which led Dolly's birth and never participated the experiment at all. The only reason that he became the lead author on the paper is a prior agreement with his colleague Dr. Keith Campbell who is the real leading creator of Dolly. After that, most research institutions and universities reclamin the honesty of scientists and strengh the power of inspection. Without those scandals, people may still be deceived by those kinds of research conclusion and the hiden problems of academia may not be highlighted and further addressd only by speaker and reformer.
However, we cannot only see the one-side of scandals and forget the neglective result of scandals. Many medias always pander people's interests to report scandals of famous people such as stars about their privacy. Does that privacy mean something to us? Definitely not. This is just a kind of wasting our precious time and miss the important things. Therefore, we should obey the claims cautions of speaker and reformer which should not be neglected.
To sum up, scandals can function as a positive way to effect our lives whether in politics, academia or other areas bacause it can be much easier to attract people's attention than speaker and reformer can be. However, undue focus will lead us fail to notice much more important affairs. In this way, the function of speaker and reformer should not be neglected.
