------正文------
Government should preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state, even though these areas, such as forests and deserts, are often extremely remote and thus accessible to only a few people.
First of all, human beings should protect the ecosystems in these areas, which are important but usually fragile. These areas play a crucial role in the evolvement of Earth's history, whether physically, chemically, and biologically. The existing ecosystems in such areas are of prefect research value, as they have documented the development of nature, which is much less influenced by human beings, compared with urban or rural areas. Through studying the current status and history records of these areas, human beings can better understand the natural evolvement of Earth and space. These data are so important that they cannot be replaced by any other records. Nevertheless, the ecosystems in these areas are often so fragile that they are not able to adapt human activities. Even a few individuals can induce severe devastation to these natural ecosystems. A single fire will put a million of trees into dashes, while a single ship fed by a single person will eat up the entire plants in an oasis. Moreover, the creatures living in these areas associate with each other so tightly that the disappearance of a single category can cause the devastation of much more categories. Therefore, government, the organization of human beings, should protect these areas which are of high value but area easy to be destroyed, even if they are remote and only accessible only to a few people.
Besides, people have to preserve these areas in their natural state in order to maintain the present global climate system. Because the ecosystems in these areas are often easily to be destroyed, the land surface characteristics of such areas are easily to be changed. When the trees in forests are cut down, the land surface albedo of that area will increase significantly, reflecting more sunlight back into outer space. Contemporarily, the ground temperature will rise remarkably in days and drop considerably at nights as the bare soil will become hotter than vegetated land when absorbing the same amount of heat, while it will become cooler than vegetated land when losing the same amount of heat. Furthermore, rivers and crop fields will be devastated without the protection of trees. On the other hand, when the little grasslands or oasis on deserts are destroyed, the sand and dust will no longer be restricted by vegetations, and will make more fertile areas into deserts. Even though these areas are usually remote and only accessible to a few individuals, their influence on the global climate system is so great that every single person on Earth will be impacted. As a result, government, holding the country's research abilities, financial supplies, and political authorities, should try to maintain the natural characteristics of these areas in order to avoid potential disasters.
In conclusion, wilderness areas, especially those owned publicly, should be maintained in their natural status by government. Even they are usually remote and accessible to only a few people, these fragile areas are of great research and climatology value. |
