398 words
For the past five years, consumers in California have been willing to pay twice as much for oysters from the northeastern Atlantic Coast as for Gulf Coast oysters. This trend began shortly after harmful bacteria were found in a few raw Gulf Coast oysters. But scientists have now devised a process for killing the bacteria. Once consumers are made aware of the increased safety of Gulf Coast oysters, they are likely to be willing to pay as much for Gulf Coast as for northeastern Atlantic Coast oysters, and greater profits for Gulf Coast oyster producers will follow.
The arguer states that the producers of Gulf Coast oysters, who have been suffering sharp declination of sales, are likely to achieve greater profits once the harmful bacteria found in some raw Gulf Coast oysters have been killed. However, the arguer's conclusion is not convincing enough to be accepted by either ordinary customers or oyster producers.

First of all, it is unverified to claim that the poor sales of Gulf Coast oysters result from the discovery of harmful bacteria. Although the declination of Gulf Coast oysters happened shortly after the discovery of such bacteria, the significant depression can be caused by other factors, such as worse tastes and higher prices, compared with Atlantic Coast oysters, which have been mentioned by the arguer. Without studying the inclinations and complaints of customers, it is too arbitrary to attribute the declination of Gulf Coast oysters simply to the discovery of bacteria. At least, the bacteria have been found only in a few raw Gulf Coast oysters, and it is not reasonable to deduce that the processed oysters still contain such bacteria.

Besides, even if the declination of Gulf Coast oysters results from the discovery of harmful bacteria, it is unreasonable to assert that the sales of Gulf Coast oysters will increase after such bacteria have been killed. Admittedly, the new scientific schemes can effectively kill the bacteria, and thus make the oysters safer to be consumed. Nevertheless, the entire effects of such scientific processes have not been carefully examined, such as the impact on tastes, one of the most important characters for customers to choose oysters. If the tastes of Gulf Coast oysters will be completely destroyed by such scientific processes, the sales of such oysters are not likely to increase at all.

Furthermore, even if the sales of Gulf Coast oysters will be improved by such scientific processes, it is unsubstantiated to expect that Gulf Coast oyster producers will achieve high profits. As no additional information demonstrates the costs of such scientific processes, the profits of Gulf Coast oysters cannot be accurately calculated. If the new scientific schemes are too expensive to be used in oyster producing industry, it is impossible for Gulf Coast oyster producers to expect increasing profits.

In conclusion, the arguer's assertion is not perfect enough to convince others, because neither the main causes of the declination of Gulf Coast oysters nor the consequent effects as well as expenses of the new scientific processes have been carefully examined.

The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language.
关键词:communicate
定义:to convey information about; make known; impart
(1)        Admittedly, images are vivid descriptions and representations, which can make large groups of people interested, pleasant, and enjoyable. Sometimes images, for example artistic works, can even convey ideas and thoughts which are not able to be described in numbers and words. However, images cannot become the most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people, whether efficiently or accurately.
(2)        First of all, languages, including words, numbers, and symbols, are implements defined to represent objects, activities, and thoughts, which can be easily used to explain complex circumstances. (the word “sun” used to indicate a huge, shining star which make the planet called “Earth” bright and comfortable; the word “push” used to represent the activity to make an object go ahead from the back; the word “sad” used to describe something sorrow and unpleasant) Without languages, the huge tasks to draw out all the images which are used to express ideas and value are too time consuming and energy consuming. Moreover, languages can be spoken as well, while images depend on media.
(3)        Besides, as languages are exactly defined to represent certain objects, activities, and thoughts, communication through languages can be more accurate than that through images, which can be viewed and explained in many different ways.

As no additional information demonstrates the costs of such scientific processes, the profits of Gulf Coast oysters cannot be accurately calculated.
In conclusion, the arguer's assertion is not perfect enough to convince others, because neither the main causes of the declination of Gulf Coast oysters nor the consequent effects as well as expenses of the new scientific processes have been carefully examined.

0 words
The following appeared in a proposal from the economic minister of the country of Paraterra.
'In order to strengthen its lagging economy, last year the government of the nearby country of Bellegea began an advertising campaign to promote ecologically sound tourism (ecotourism). This year the number of foreign visitors arriving at Bellegea's main airport doubled, and per capita income in Bellegea increased by ten percent. To provide more income for the population of Paraterra and also preserve the natural environment of our tiny country, we too should begin to promote ecotourism. To ensure that our advertising campaign is successful, we should hire the current director of Bellegea's National Tourism Office as a consultant for the campaign.'
(1)        Bellegea began an advertising campaign to promote ecotourism last year + this year the number of foreign visitors doubled + per capita income in Bellegea increased = the promotion of ecotourism provided the residents of Bellegea with more income
(2)        The promotion of ecotourism provided the population of Bellegea with more income = promoting ecotourism can offer inhabitants of Paraterra more income + the natural environment of Paraterra can be preserved
(3)        The promotion of ecotourism is profitable + the promotion of Bellegea is successful = hiring the current director of Bellegea’s National Tourism Office will make the advertising campaign in Paraterra successful
(1)        First of all, it is unverified to attribute the increased income of Bellegea’s residents to the advertising campaign. (the total number of tourists; the main causes of developing tourism; the main causes of improved economy)
(2)        Besides, even if the promotion of ecotourism has brought Bellegea more profits, it is unsubstantiated to deduce that such campaign is beneficial to Paraterra, either economically or environmentally.
(3)        Furthermore, even if the promotion of ecotourism will benefit Paraterra, it is unreasonable to recommend to hire the current director of Bellegea’s National Tourism Office.
