------题目------
For the past five years, consumers in California have been willing to pay twice as much for oysters from the northeastern Atlantic Coast as for Gulf Coast oysters. This trend began shortly after harmful bacteria were found in a few raw Gulf Coast oysters. But scientists have now devised a process for killing the bacteria. Once consumers are made aware of the increased safety of Gulf Coast oysters, they are likely to be willing to pay as much for Gulf Coast as for northeastern Atlantic Coast oysters, and greater profits for Gulf Coast oyster producers will follow.
------正文------
The arguer states that the producers of Gulf Coast oysters, who have been suffering sharp declination of sales, are likely to achieve greater profits once the harmful bacteria found in some raw Gulf Coast oysters have been killed. However, the arguer's conclusion is not convincing enough to be accepted by either ordinary customers or oyster producers.
First of all, it is unverified to claim that the poor sales of Gulf Coast oysters result from the discovery of harmful bacteria. Although the declination of Gulf Coast oysters happened shortly after the discovery of such bacteria, the significant depression can be caused by other factors, such as worse tastes and higher prices, compared with Atlantic Coast oysters, which have been mentioned by the arguer. Without studying the inclinations and complaints of customers, it is too arbitrary to attribute the declination of Gulf Coast oysters simply to the discovery of bacteria. At least, the bacteria have been found only in a few raw Gulf Coast oysters, and it is not reasonable to deduce that the processed oysters still contain such bacteria.
Besides, even if the declination of Gulf Coast oysters results from the discovery of harmful bacteria, it is unreasonable to assert that the sales of Gulf Coast oysters will increase after such bacteria have been killed. Admittedly, the new scientific schemes can effectively kill the bacteria, and thus make the oysters safer to be consumed. Nevertheless, the entire effects of such scientific processes have not been carefully examined, such as the impact on tastes, one of the most important characters for customers to choose oysters. If the tastes of Gulf Coast oysters will be completely destroyed by such scientific processes, the sales of such oysters are not likely to increase at all.
Furthermore, even if the sales of Gulf Coast oysters will be improved by such scientific processes, it is unsubstantiated to expect that Gulf Coast oyster producers will achieve high profits. As no additional information demonstrates the costs of such scientific processes, the profits of Gulf Coast oysters cannot be accurately calculated. If the new scientific schemes are too expensive to be used in oyster producing industry, it is impossible for Gulf Coast oyster producers to expect increasing profits.
In conclusion, the arguer's assertion is not perfect enough to convince others, because neither the main causes of the declination of Gulf Coast oysters nor the consequent effects as well as expenses of the new scientific processes have been carefully examined. |
