The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper.
"The librarians in our town's school system have reported that the number of trips that our students make to their school library on a voluntary basis has decreased significantly in recent years. For example, the average seventh-grade student visited the school library five times last year, but four of those visits were part of required classroom activities. This shows that our students are reading less than in the past. To address this problem, our town needs to improve the atmosphere of the libraries so that they will be comfortable places in which to work. If students view the libraries as uncomfortable, then they are unlikely to want to spend much time there."
This editorial is not well reasoned since the arguer confuses improving of the students in the town with increasing of the time they go to the school libraries. At the same time, some related details are not cogent enough. I will discuss each of these questionable facets in turn.
Primarily, the author apparently concludes the students in the town study less, or at least, have less opportunity to study due to the decrease of the time students go to the school libraries in the report. However, there is only a specious relation between them. In this era of IYFT, students can learn more in many different ways except for going to libraries. TV and Internet have been pointed out as two main sources for the students to get information not only in physics, math or other subjects they may study in schools, but also politics or society they should know in the rapid-changing world. Students can easily have self-improvement through watching some scientific program, such as National Geography, or logging on The Economist website to read the analyses of the politics and business. Further more, students can also learn more in their primary knowledge source 'school'. Supposing the schools in the town improve their teaching quality by giving the students more classes, distributing more homework, or encouraging them to take part in study-related activities, it is reasonable for the students to have less time to go to the school libraries though the quality of the studying can still be warranted.
At the same time, the conclusion that the students are reading less than in the past is also groundless even if reading is thought to be a unique method to obtain knowledge. Students have many ways to read. Firstly, they can borrow books. If the number and the deadline of borrowing are not strictly restricted, the students can take large numbers of books home and have a gormandize of reading by annual five times’ borrowing. Secondly, they may go to the municipal libraries in spite of the school libraries since the latter tend to be smaller, and students may not find too many books they need there. In addition, the students can gain books in many other ways, such as buying books in the bookstore, borrowing books from their friends, and even reading E-book.
In such situation, it may require the libraries in the town to make a relative improvement to help students to get further progress rather than merely ameliorate the environment of the libraries. One method might be that libraries should buy latest books or some books that can hardly be obtained by the students, e.g. scientific magazines and encyclopedias. The atmosphere of the libraries may close related to students’ inclination to the libraries, but compared to the quality of the libraries it may not seem that important.
Finally the report the newspaper excerpted is not valid since only seventh-grade students are being counted. It is highly possible that the seventh-grade students have to take part in more activities or have special-studying training in school which is obstacle for them to have time to go to the school libraries. If the arguer wants this conclusion more persuasive, he should make a more all-concluded survey.
The original intention of the arguer to think of the students are good, however it may be a wrong way to relate it to the report that is presented in the argument. It needs more conscious concern to make sure that the students in our town really receive a good support. |
