TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 608          TIME: 1:13:13(revised)          DATE: 2006-7-2

What kind of education will be truly effective? The speaker believes that ONLY the education specifically designed that can meet the individual needs and interests will be TRULY effective. My understanding of "truly effective" is not only to meet individual goals but also to fulfill social requirements. Though I recognize the virtue of the speaker's opinion that education should pay attention on individual needs, I cannot agree that is the ONLY criterion to judge the effectiveness of education.

Admittedly, emphasis on individual needs and interests is a positive element in education. The basic mission of education is to help people learn more knowledge to live a better life. Students will have more motivation in study when the education is in line with their personal preferences. Otherwise, it will not be a pleasant experience for anyone to learn anything efficiently. Some teenagers even absent school to run away from the "boring" classes. Countless negative samples illustrate that to meet individual needs and interests is very critical in stimulating students' self motivation in study.

Unfortunately, our current education system cannot pay adequate attention on each individual. Thomas Edison was considered as one of the "stupid" students by his teacher since he always asked weird questions and did not well in almost all the designed classes. If young Edison lives in our time now, can we have 100% confidence that teachers of today can recognize his talents? The answer perhaps will still be NO. All the educators need to bear in mind that discovering characteristics of each student will be vital in students’ individual development and also the overall education development.

However, isolated emphasizing the individual would result in poor social education level. Restricted by the finite educational resource, the amount of teacher is only a small percentage as the amount of students. In China, there are usually 50 students in one classroom, even in the high-end middle schools in the top 3 biggest cities. How can one teacher develop different educational means to fit the different needs from 50 students? It is not realistic to request school teachers to be family teachers that provide customized education to each student. In some special training centers, educators are trying to offer customized training courses. But, that cannot be extended to the social school education system, since by doing that, we would invest large amount of resources on a very small amount of people, so that reduce the opportunity for others to receive essential school education.

Furthermore, there is a high possibility that students cannot figure out their real needs and interests that could benefit their future. They need to be taught about the expectations from the society, including the necessary knowledge, ethics and skills to achieve social recognition. Young people often mistake hobbies with interests or needs. Moreover, since they are lack of life experience, they are likely to be influenced by the popular trend, the temptations, the consensus, and so forth, without rational considerations. A responsible educator should help students learn at least scientific methodology, primary knowledge about the society and the principles of ethics in the first place, so that students could have the capability to determine their real desire about knowledge. If not, students might find their "interests" turn out to be useless or conflict towards the social requirements.

In sum, to generate more better developed individuals that could benefit the society, more focuses on individual needs and interests should be put onto agenda to improve our current education system. At the same time, social requirements should be highlighted as the same priority in education. Only the education can meet both individual and social needs will be truly effective.

很有创意的开头,略微压缩就更佳。

从social and individual 论述很好。结构也清晰。用词准确。例子还需精心挑选。
