It is true that the increasingly advancing technologies do have made a great difference in humans life almost in every aspect, as in retrospect, we can see how much our lives have changed from our predecessors in that we can do so many things with ease that can't even be imagined before, especially in our social customs and ethics. However great impact the technologies have on us, as far as I'm concerned, we need to keep alert and take good charge of them.

In the first place, a sharp comparison will demonstrate the profound influence modern technologies have on our customs. For one thing is the transportation, which is one of the key factors affecting our development. Date back to the old times when there was not cars, ships, trains, not to mention the airplanes, people used to stay at home or restrict their activities in the neighborhood and industries usually satisfied the local needs with local supplies whereas with those production of progressing technologies we are free to travel to any place whenever we need and we'd like to and buy products, even fresh milk or fruits, in China shipped or airlifted from America just hours ago. For another, let's see how different we communicate with modern facilities like phones, emails, MSN, and video camera. More and more people no longer write a letter on paper, compared to the much faster and economical email, the writing mail are regarded as snail mail. What's more, because of the conveniences of phones, MSN as well as the video camera, face to face conversation in on a sharp decline, which is a two-edged sword bringing both positive and negative effects. Entertainment is another facet that can't be ignored in terms of customs. TVs, cinemas, computer games, and modern parks with exciting technologically advanced games, say the Disneyland for instance, and so forth has offered so much fun that people now has much more to do in their spare time and vacations. All those above have manifested the brilliant progress technologies have pushed us to achieve.

In the second place, I would like to illustrate that the technologies has in many ways challenged our established ethics. Start from the dissection in medical research, when medical school students help their doctor carry the dead body to the platform and then watch it being dissected, after which comes the process of their own practice, have they ever think about all these behavior are strongly forbidden and regarded as an evil deed? But they became acceptable as the technology goes on, we no longer think it's a disregard of the dead and the god even though most of us still don't want it's ourselves that being dissected. Another case in point is the plastic surgery that is increasingly heating up. Crazy as more and more people are, they cut their faces, block up their noses, widen their eyes...whatever they can think up that they are not satisfied with, they reshape it. What a strike it has hit on our previous ethics? Especially in Korea, which is thought to be kind of conservative, plastic surgery becomes a leading trend that almost everyone follows. the last but not the least frontier I'd like to mention is clone which has caused fierce dissention. What's it going to be like if somebody is dead but another him is cloned or he is not dead and there are two of him? Seemingly ridiculous, but good excuses can always been created. Thereby is it going to disobey our ethics and arouse a serious chaos? All of these are compelling challenges technologies has put on us.

In the last but most important statement I'd like to say that everything is double-side-edged, including the technology, which can bring us grand advantages as well as huge disasters. We can not deny and refuse the benefit from it; neither can we let it out of control. It is not the technologies but the human beings that should determine and steer our way of life. Only when we come to this agreement and give a thought to every decision we're going to make when dealing with the technologies, can we really take charge of our future and manipulate the technologies to go in the orbit maximize its advantages and minimize the possibilities of bringing panic and disasters.
