Issue 147
“Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.”
People live in present world may encounter various conflicts between tradition and modernization. Does these conflicts indicate that tradition and modernization are incompatible? No. A myriad of facts tell us that they can exist in a same period, and it is not necessary for people to make a choice between them. Tradition and modernization, in fact, are mutually beneficial rather than stand on opposite points.
My first belief is that it is through the modernization that traditions continue to serve and delight people’s life. Consider the human’s pursuit of religious. What came to my mind firstly is an American student in my university, who once came to our dormitory to instruct the Holy Bible. When we asked her how and where she prayed in China, in which seldom churches can be found, and her answer astonished us a lot. She replied that she did not frequently go to churches in China because she does not accustomed the atmosphere there, which is quite different from that in American churches. Instead, she prayed online on a specific religious website with her friends, and thus she could have the experience as if she were in the churches of her motherland. It is a good example that modernization of our society actually can serve to preserve the traditions. Besides religious belief, modern technology also plays a vital role in promoting traditions, such as the repairing past architecture by importing advanced techniques, educating the young traditional virtues by using modern information technology, and so on. In short, modernization, instead of undermining and imperiling traditions, actually facilitates the preservation and development of traditions, so they are not only compatible but also mutually beneficial.
In other hand, what traditions can benefit modernization lies in the notion that traditions possessed the function of guiding and even determining modernization. Although we live in a world where is high modernized, some ingrained traditional beliefs and customs have not changed in short-term and these traditions, in most cases, will be regarded as the reference of modern innovations. For instance, in recent soccer match, the four referees in a match are required by the FIFA to wear advanced equipment to communicate, in order to minimum the occurrence of biased judgment. Admittedly, all of these improvements and changes are the result of modernization, but what these modern technological innovations are based on the traditional rules in soccer field. Without these rules, technology cannot be used to ensure the fair of soccer matches. Under some circumstances, we can even conclude that modernization is a result of adaptation of traditions to newly-developed technology, such as the examples mentioned in the second paragraph—the online pray program is invented by combine religious conventions and advanced computer techniques.
It is obvious that people can easily find marriage of traditions and modernizations. When they have meal in restaurant, they may find that the traditional dishes are cooked in a modernized way so that more people can taste it; when they surf online, they can search a lot of conventional customs and literatures and then preserve them in a safe way to avoid losing. People should not choose between traditions and modernizations, since they usually exist in a same time and a same surrounding.
To sum up, the statement oversimplified the relationship between traditions and modernizations. From my point of view, traditions and modernization can coexist in our contemporary society by mutually benefiting and people, fortunately, can develop ideas to combine and integrate them and then share the outcomes they provide us. |
