------题目------
The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies.
------正文------
The speaker asserts that making as much money as possible for companies within the law the only responsibility of corporate executives. Though achieving maximum profits is an important target for corporate executives, the speaker has over evaluated the effects of laws, but has neglected the restrictions of nature and society.
Admittedly, making maximum profits is a crucial responsibility for corporate executives, and the limits of the law should be undoubtedly followed. Corporate executives, acting as the leaders of their companies, have obtained credibility and reliability from the vast majority of employees. As a result, they should react to such credibility and reliability, by making their companies active and providing employees perfect financial lives. Additionally, the restriction of laws, as the basic requirements of a nation or a country, should be obeyed by any residents, including corporate executives.
However, neither can the system of the law put up with the development of society, nor can it oversee every aspect of society. Therefore, corporate executives do not only have to obey laws, but should follow the restrictions of nature and society as well.
First of all, corporate executives' activities to achieve maximum profits cannot exceed the affordability of nature. As some fundamental constructions of business, such as science and technology, often go in front of the development of society, the system of laws is usually not able to limit newly applied discoveries and inventions. Hence, if corporate executives only focus on maximum profits and restrictions of the law, they will not take care of potential natural problems, for example pollution. In the golden age of London's industry, without corresponding law limitations, factories burnt as much coal as possible and achieved high profits. Nevertheless, the consequent London Smoke, which was generated by coal burning, killed thousands of inhabitants in this rich city. If those factories' corporate executives had obeyed the affordability of nature, the smoke disaster would not have appeared and many residents would have been protected.
Besides, corporate executives' activities to obtain maximum profits cannot go beyond the balance of society. Because the system of laws is not accomplished enough to maintain the steadiness of society, corporate executives have to follow restrictions to the preserve balance of society. While trying to make high profits, a company cannot rob surviving possibilities of relevant organizations, or severe results will be induced. Hunters often like to obtain as many preys as possible, but they will never hunt over all animals in their forests, because they cannot survive either when animals are disappeared. Similarly, if a company has ignored other organizations' surviving possibility can broken the balance of economy or education, it will suffer corresponding losing of resources and markets.
In conclusion, corporate executives have their responsibility to achieve high profits for their companies and employees, yet they should not only obey the system of laws, but follow the restrictions of nature and society as well. |
