TOPIC: ARGUMENT153 - The following is from an editorial in the Midvale Observer, a local newspaper.
"Ever since the 1950's, when television sets began to appear in the average home, the rate of crimes committed by teenagers in the country of Alta has steadily increased. This increase in teenage crime parallels the increase in violence shown on television. According to several national studies, even very young children who watch a great number of television shows featuring violent scenes display more violent behavior within their home environment than do children who do not watch violent shows. Furthermore, in a survey conducted by the Observer, over 90 percent of the respondents were parents who indicated that prime-time television-programs that are shown between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.-should show less violence. Therefore, in order to lower the rate of teenage crime in Alta, television viewers should demand that television programmers reduce the amount of violence shown during prime time."

The arguer's view seems to be sound and convincing at first glance that the amount of violence shown during prime time should be reducedby television programmers because violence shown on television has become a catalyzer of crimes committed by teenagers according to some  survey. However, I'm afraid his argument can hardly bear further consideration since there are several flaws in it .

Firstly, Display more violent behavior within their home environment does not follow that they will display more violent behavior out side home. Perhaps those children are always emaciated ,with their parents ' dotage, they seems became violent at home. When they go  out of  their refuge, they are often ridded roughshod over by stronger one, though they want to be violent. Moreover, displaying violent does not equal committing crime. Committing a crime always means that  the teenagers hurt others'  property or security badly. However, the teenagers who is instigated by the violence shown on television may bluster to some people to display his violence. Some slight injury of the victim can make of a crime.

Secondly, no evidence shows that the majority of these teenage criminals are used to watch violent shows. Careful examination reveals that the arguer are  failing to consider other possible alternatives to the commit  crimes by these teenage criminals .Such alternatives may include the fact that the condition of their families are poor and these children are short of adequate  education from their parents and teachers. Thus, lacking of moral sense and dissatisfactory circumstance of their live,  they may turn into thieves or robbers. As a consequence, unless the arguer take these probabilities into account , we can not accept what he claims.

Finally,  in support of his claim the author cites a recent survey that most respondents agree with reducing the amount of violence on TV. However, the survey is too simple and lacks universalism. The arguer provides no evidence that the survey's respondents are representative of the overall group of people ,such as children who have been considered as victims of violence of TV .Further, those respondents' opinions about TV show time are only between 7p.m. and 9 p.m. We can not find the disposal about others .Perhaps ,most  teenagers prefer to  watch TV on 4p.m. and 6 p.m.

In sum , it's unwise to reduce the amount of violent on tv according to the arguer's conclusion. More deeply reflection about the  reason leading to commuting crime among the teenagers and detailed survey of respondents including parents and children should be taken.
