TOPIC: ARGUMENT143 - The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a national newspaper.

"Your recent article on corporate downsizing* in the United States is misleading. The article gives the mistaken impression that many competent workers who lost jobs as a result of downsizing face serious economic hardship, often for years, before finding other suitable employment. But this impression is contradicted by a recent report on the United States economy, which found that since 1992 far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated. The report also demonstrates that many of those who lost their jobs have found new employment. Two-thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, and the vast majority of these jobs are full-time."

*Downsizing is the process in which corporations deliberately reduce the number of their employees.

To summary, the letter is misleading and the argument is unfair to the workers who lost jobs.

The arguer's evidence is a new report on the United States economy showing far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated. But what has not been concerned is whether these jobs proper to those workers competent before. Recent new jobs and careers require creativity enthusiasm and new knowledge. Let’s have a look at on education careers. Now teachers need the ability of using mass media. It is easy to a young teacher but extremely hard to those retired or be fired teachers because they may never get touch with these new machines and teaching methods. Similar conditions also occur on other careers, for example construction industry.

The arguer may assert that many of fired employees have found new jobs, another reason for the conclusion. But detail information is lack. The report get this conclusion from whose response? If the samples in the survey are the readers of the United States economy, we can hardly believe the result of the report for the conners do not contain all the aspects of unemployed people. Some of them may so poor that can not afford such a magazine or newspaper, so the United States economy has no idea to know and report the living condition of them.

What is more, high salary is a character of new job chances, but may not adapt to those fired employees. Because these above-average wages jobs need full-time workers in industries, it is hard for these job-need people win the competition in these areas. Elder, women, inefficiency are the characters of these people. How can we imagine the picture of these people working hard in factories all day and solving complex problems in industries?

It seems that, unless actually statistics and detail information are given out, we can not accept the conclusion in the letter.
