TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

Our recorded history is etched with tremendous valuable works of art, which not only brighten individuals' lives through adding hue to quotidian life, also boost the development of our society as a whole. Nevertheless, besides the significant role of our artists, the critics, who evaluate works of art, also exert their own functions in bringing some lasting value to our society, presenting the masterpiece available to the mass, as well as advancing the working levels of artists.
The chief reason why I stress the function of artist is that, the essential value of art represented by the perfect combination of the mirrored world and one's profound perspective. In some way, our brilliant artists use a certain medium to express their passion and insight toward the outside. Photographer Sherry Levine exerts grotesque images of women, in an attempt to protest the oppression of the female gender by American advertising, law, and social custom. Also, Van Gogh, talented Holland artist, through the use of concentrated color, spilled his strong adoration toward the nature on the canvas. With the unique form of expressing one's deepest feelings, as well as his or her vision of our universe, more hidden respects about our society and humanity could be perceived, and meanwhile the works of arts evoke deeper thoughts toward our complex and contradictory world.
While focusing on the great value derived from our artists, we cannot overlook the activating roles critics have played in the history. The threshold function of an average critic is to serve as the impetus in promoting the artistic’ s working levels, boosting the development of the society spiritually yet indirectly. A critic can provide feedback timely for a newly-publicized artwork, and also impersonal and constructive criticism, if taken to heart, can result in better work. After all, not only does a critic own the ability of appreciation and evaluation, he or she can express the view overtly and clearly, making it heard by the artists. Without the proper and profound criticism toward Dan Brown’s initial work Digital Fortress which did not sell well, there would be no The Dan Vinci Code, which has led to the climax of his novel writing. Thus, if conveyed properly, the ideas in the form of criticism could draw the artist’s attention, as well as steering one’s work to a promising way.
Another compelling reason, which could explain the critic’s great contribution to the our holistic society, refers to the critic’s role of serving as a filter, which helps us determine which art is worth our time and attention. Appropriate critical evaluation might entice the people's attention towards those works. The famous Impressionism could lend sound credence to my viewpoint. Without the care and fierce criticism toward those seemingly quirk artworks, maybe few persons would notice them. Thus, the unique and fluent skills and special ideas conveyed by Impressionism would not be able to come into the public's attention, saying nothing of the latter Impressionism's prevailing trend among the mass. After all, ironically speaking, nobody would like to kick a dead dog. It is just those fierce attack that make artworks attractive, better appreciated, and eventually prosperous, which otherwise would evade from the public's sights.
Simply put, on balance, the value of art, cherished product of our brilliant and talented artist, is the perfect combination of the special and authentic passion, a manifestation of the unique creative pulse, and the creation of artist’s spirit. Nonetheless, we as audience, as well as our artists would also have to resort to the critics, who make the marvelous artworks accessible to the public, as well as elevating the working levels of artists. |
