To begin with, I would like to remind the public the values produced by the artists. No one would deny seriously the essential role of artists in the progress of our society. Not only can arts exert effects on the development of culture, but it even has major impacts on the progress of the society as a whole. Renaissance serves as an outstanding example here. The accomplishment of Michelangelo, such as statuary David and painting in the Sistine chapel ceiling, is appreciated by posterity for centuries. Likewise, the 9th symphony, one of the most famous works composed by Beethoven, has encouraged innumerable people to reshape and change their own destiny. Let to see modern example, Mark Twin, a famous American novelist, used his articles to reveal many social problems at his time. Now, his articles serve as useful information to study the political and sociological situation of that time. Another example is Charles Chaplin, who performed many humorous roles in movies to expose the miserable life of workers at that time, and which evoked sympathy of the whole society. In short, the artists use art to give society something of lasting value.

One the one hand, the critic enables ordinary people to better understand the meaning of a works of the art which the author use vague way to express. When artist create a works, he or she is inevitable to entrench his opinions and ideas within it. If you do not familiar with this artist, it might become difficult for you to fully understand what artist really wants to express. One of the functions of critics, nevertheless, is to interpret the connotation in the works, which can help ordinary people to better understand the author's thinking. The recent prevailing movie Broke Back Mountain is the example in point. The director used many minor plots to describe the inside world of hero, but it is quite possible be ignored by most audiences. Nevertheless, if you have read comment first, which would caution you to pay attention to those plots, you would become more understanding the skillful ability of director, Lee Ann, who excel at using minor plots to express character of hero.

On the other hand, it is quite sure that when a critic evaluates a works, his opinion about it is shaped by his own culture, outlook, values, preference, and habits and so much. In fact, no one live in the same world. For the same works, there is a good chance that different critic has divergent opinion; even at different time same critic might give different opinion. And also, for ordinary people, they might have their own innovative thinking which is related to individual background. Actually, in some cases, the opinions which come from critics are harmful and hamper the development of the arts. Van Gogh, for example, his works was regarded by the critics at his time as only the catharsis of his crazy mind, until his death, his works were not recognized by the public. Quite a significant period later, his works were eventually accepted by society, and now most of his works have already become important ones in the history of art of postimpressionism.

In sum, as what has been discussed above, the effects of the critics on art can be positive and negative. For those opinions given by professors, we can take them as a reference, but we also should caution not to let the critique to be the sole criterion for testing the values of art, sometimes, artist should insist his own belief.
