I agree with the title statement that artists rather than critics are those who give the society something of lasting value, but we should still realize the work of critics in helping people appreciate works of artists.

(What is the lasting value?) The value of art lies in many aspects. It brings us the feeling of pleasure. Absorbed in the astonishing plot of "Harry Potter"(), we feel a strong sense of happiness. Watching the ballet Swan Lake, we get a lot of enjoyment from the grace performance of dancers. What arts present to us:  visual or aural () beauty, amusing and amazing plots, are all delectable. Art also gives us instructions: Ingemar Bergman's films urge us not to miss the unspoken and the delicately nuanced.

In fact, art is the medium that artists use as expression of feelings and criticism of society, which is the essential function of art. All other functions come from this one. Bai Li, the most famous Chinese romantic poet, use his poems () to express his feelings, ideals () and dreams, the poems are also the source of beauty because of beautiful and romantic lines and ideas.  The French painter Honore Daumier, in the 1830s used his brush and pencil to protest political oppression, which is also an instruction for the others to resist anything unjust. It is the poems of Bai Li and Honore Daumier give us something valuable by their works, not those who criticize them or praise them. The essential function of art suggests that the value of art should be attributed to artists.  

Some values artists bring us are ever-lasting. In spite that the society have changed to some extent, those famous artist and article () works seems to be far from us, the value does not diminish () with time. Beauty is the perpetual factor that human pursuit, therefore the value of beauty in art is lasting. So does the value of instructions. Some people might opposed that instructions cannot be perpetual in that situations are changing greatly as time elapses () and instructions in art can only applied to the era () when work was created. However, the value of art as instructions are not as simple as a post, most of its instructions are pointed to humanity, which almost never change with time. We can take Shakespeare's Macbeth as an example. That work suggests that inordinate ambition is not always beneficial, which we should learn by heart. Nowadays, inordinate ambition is still dangerous, which might lead to confliction and over competition, no matter for countries or for individuals. Hitler and Saddam Hussein are the examples of over ambition and eventually lead to wars.

Obviously, the value of art lies in works of artists and it is originally created by artists rather than critics. Critics are those who evaluate works of art rather than create value of art, why? That can be logically demonstrated by the duty of critics--evaluation. How can one evaluate a thing? There must be a premise that the value of a thing come before the evaluation. Likewise, the value of art exists before it is evaluated by critics. Further, although the jobs of critics are making evaluation of art, whereas, there do not stand standards than are accepted by all people. Critics only evaluate art by their own standards, therefore the evaluation cannot be objective and convincing all the time, and it is hard for critics themselves to distinguish works of everlasting value from vulgar ones. It is frequent that critics have different views about the same work and some views tend to deny the value of great work. "Impression: Sunrise", one of Monet's famous work, was not understood and even criticized by critics at that time, because of  peculiar use of  a large amount of blue for sunlight. However, now it is generally accepted invaluable and led to the name for impressionism. Of course, the value of "Impression: Sunrise" is not give by critics, on the country, those critics nearly impede people to appreciate the value of it.

Though sometimes, critics might have negative effects on the recognition of the value of art, the job of critics do help people better understand the value sometimes. Critics are generally those who are more expert at art, and have better understanding of it. The role of the critic is just like that of the ciceroni (). The value of view pots()  present both object information and his or her understanding  of view pots, which ,however, may be more professional than tourists, thus, it can help tourists better understand, objectively speaking, sometimes they might also present false information and understanding because they are limited in many aspects such as knowledge and experience. Critics work in the similar way.

In conclusion, artists give the value by their works, and critics could only help us to understand the value to some extent
