The speaker asserts that as much is new and complex today, looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present, which I cannot agree at all. Although many innovations and revolutions take place every day, the understanding of the past provides people with important reference as well as useful guidance, because the evolvement of human civilization, such as academy, economy, and politics, is a process of accumulation rather than reconstruction.

First of all, in the realm of academy, the understanding of the past is not only the resource of reference and guidance, but also the fundamental knowledge to approach new and complex areas. Without the understanding of calculation schemes used by predecessors, people cannot solve the new and complex math problems. Without the understanding of mechanics and construction theories concluded in the past, people cannot design huge skyscrapers or dams. While the past perfect schemes provide people with effective methods, the past verified theories prevent people from making mistakes. As a result, the understanding of the past academy is the necessary basis to study new and complex areas today.

Besides, in the field of economy, the understanding of the past offer people the basic characteristics of relevant events as well as experiences of success and failure. As the new and complex economic activities in present lives unavoidably have relationships with affairs in the past, the understanding of the past can exhibit meaningful information about such actions, such as the background of appearance, the development of similar circumstances, and the interactions between crucial factors. Take the complex stock market for example. The prediction of stock alternations is mainly based on past statistics other than anything else. The understanding of the past stock variety shows people relationships between stock prices and other factors, including the recent activities of the company, the status of relevant productions, the inclinations of citizens, and the principles of local government. In conclusion, the newness and complexity today cannot reduce the usefulness of the understanding of the past for guiding the lives in the present. Because the evolvement of human civilization, whether academy, economy, or politics, is a process of accumulation, the guidance coming from the understanding of the past is significantly important and efficient in present lives, serving as basic knowledge, perfect reference, as well as efficient methods.
