TOPIC: ARGUMENT222 - The following article appeared in a recent issue of a college newspaper.

"Among all students who graduated from Hooper University over the past five years, more physical science majors than social science majors found permanent jobs within a year of graduation. In a survey of recent Hooper University graduates, most physical science majors said they believed that the prestige of Hooper University's physical science programs helped them significantly in finding a job. In contrast, social science majors who found permanent employment attributed their success to their own personal initiative. Therefore, to ensure that social science majors find permanent jobs, Hooper University should offer additional social science courses and hire several new faculty members who already have national reputations in the social sciences."

The author in the issue advocated that the university should hire new faculty who have national reputations in the social science to increase the prestige of the Hooper University in the social science. To support the avocation, the author gave out a survey that the physical science major graduates get the permanent job easier due to the prestige of the university. However I find the argument unconvincing for several reasons.

First and foremost, the reason why the physics science graduate students get job more easily do not fully account for the prestige of the university. The society need and the job vacancy available can not be neglected. For example, there is a big company major in the semi-conduct product opening in the area five years ago, so the need a lot of the physic major graduate to work for them. But because there have been enough social science people serving in the city, the job offered to them are almost temporary or even no job is given to them. The human resource and the company and the enterprise which can serve the job chance are just like the relationship between the product supply and the marketing demand. It is objectively exist.

Secondly, the most important factor that determines whether a person is employable for the job is not his or her university, but rather the ability she or he has, and at the same times, the personal initiative is quite important. A company or an association definitely will not hire a graduate who mastering no skills but graduating from a good university. The graduate who accepted the survey said the can get they job due to the university probably say that because of his humility and the appreciation for his school.

Thirdly, even the prestige of the university has a great influence on the job problem. Only hiring several famous faculties and offering additional course are not enough. Evaluating a major’s accomplishment depends on a lot of factors, such as the ability of the whole faculties and the academic source, the regulations of the department, and the activity of the student and so forth.

In sum, even if the author can successful hire the famous faculty to serve in the social and science major. The successful job hunting is still not guarantee. To solve the problem, I think the author should consider more effectively solutions. First, to investigate the job demand for the social science major and plan the number of the student enrolled. Secondly, provide some program, training the student with some practical skills that will benefit the student in the future work and some tip for the job interview.

我来挑下毛病吧,:D

另外,permanent jobs 是所有人的梦想那?可能自由职业对于社会学学生来说更是理想那?即便他们有permanent jobs 被提供也未必想去

permanent jobs=good job吗?
