------正文------
The speaker asserts that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives, and a leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little. This assertion seems reasonable, but in my opinion, the speaker has confused the concepts of confident activity with arbitrary behavior. While confidence is an important quality of a leader, neglecting popular shifts arbitrarily prevents a leader from becoming effective, that is, credible, understandable, amenable, energetic, and efficient.
On one hand, necessary confidence to remain committed to one's principles and objectives is undoubtedly an important quality of an effective leader, who is considered credible and understandable by ordinary people. Consider a leader who change opinions and ideas frequently and unpredictably, for example, an academic leader who switch attitudes to a theory frequently, or a political leader who alternate principles unpredictably. It is hard for ordinary people to avoid questioning the ability and quality of these leaders. Does the academic leader actually have enough knowledge to understand the theory? Has the political leader carefully considered the current situation? Are there anyone conducting illegal affairs to induce such changes? Such questions and imaginations will obviously reduce the credibility of the leaders. Moreover, it is difficult for ordinary people to understand these changeable leaders and predict their variable principles. As a result, the confidence of a leader is a basic character to establish necessary credibility and authority, and the relatively consistent principles and objectives are easy for the staff and other ordinary residents to understand and conduct.
On the other hand, it is also essential for an effective leader to examine and consider the shifts in popular opinion quickly and actively, in order to lead the staff efficiently by keeping up with increasing information and variable situation. Refusing to consider popular opinions will make a leader arbitrary, who is not easily acceptable to the staff, because ignoring or neglecting the opinions and feelings of ordinary people will make them unpleasant and uncomfortable. Besides, keeping touch with popular shifts provides a leader with the newest information in society, including people's inclinations, attitudes, and ideas. While examining such information actively helps a leader appear energetically and tends to influence the staff positively, the results of analyzing such information helps a leader grasp the status of developing society and make advanced decisions. Therefore, keeping touch with popular shifts offers many advantages, which are too valuable to be neglected by a leader who wants to become effective.
In conclusion, both the confidence to remain committed to one's principles as well as objectives and the awareness to keep up with popular shifts actively are important characteristics of an effective leader. While the former help establish the leader's credibility and understandability, the latter enables the leader to appear amenable and energetic, and to make advanced decisions efficiently. |
