I agree with the speaker that all nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world’s most persistent social problems. The university can help students better understand cultures and societies that are different from their own. And there will be great academic achievement to be expected.

First, the global university will have good effects on the communications between countries. Because it is meant to be a global university, the composition of the faculty and the students should be very much diversified. People from all over the world come to the university to study and to do research. At different levels of academic activities, for example, seminars and group discussions, ideas and understandings affected by different cultural backgrounds are exchanged. So the academic life in the global university could encourage communications between people from different countries.

Moreover, the global university will have great meaning in research on world’s social problems and in solving these problems. So there is a great academic prospect. The global university will be a perfect place for comparative study. As we know, social problems in different societies have similarities and differences at the same time, and social problems are closely connected with the very specific nature of a society’s cultural social being. For example, though having similarities, racial problems in France and in America are different in many ways. Because professors and students are from all over the world and are therefore from different cultures and societies, it is convenient for them address the similarities and difference between social problems in different societies. Hence, the global university is perfect for comparative study, and this is especially meaningful for social sciences and solving persistent social problems.

However, there are many practical problems to be considered about the global university. One obvious problem is actually how the faculty and students should be composed of. Should we decide how many professors or students a nation should have in the university by the nation’s population or academic achievement? There are countries which lack the basic infrastructure, and they cannot afford higher education and so they have little academic achievement. Another question is where this global university should be located.

In conclusion, because the global university can encourage the communications between people from different societies and cultures and it has great academic prospect, all nations should help support the development of the global university, although there are many practical problems that should be considered concerning the global university.
