The artist, be it composer, sculptor, or painter, brought about originality and uniqueness to our civilization. All those masterpieces originate from creativities regardless of region and time, thereby creating lasting value for the society. Notwithstanding, the critic also plays a vital role of interpreter between the artist and the public, thus better transmitting and preserving the value.
In the view of originality and uniqueness, we cannot deny the fact that it is always the artist, not the critic, who at first create the unique masterpieces of lasting value, ranging from grand pyramid built by ancient Egyptian, fantastic summer palace constructed by ancient Chinese, eternal and mysterious smile of Mona Liza by Da Vinci, to name just a few. They all stand uniquely in the world both by their aesthetic value and social consequences. William Shakespeare's Sonnet and plays, for instance, has attracted generations of people and are regarded as the common wealth of the entire human being by their indescribable beauty and profound thought. The lasting value comes not only from the creative plots, characters, themes, and language, but the spirit of humanity infused into the works, which push the spirit of renaissance to the climax and is still transmitting the charm to millions of people. Another illustration comes from Li bai, a famous Chinese ancient poet in Tang dynasty, who broke the boundary of the traditional poetic forms and set up the brand new romanticism in Chinese ancient poems. His poems were regarded as the great inheritance of Chinese civilization, let alone of lasting value.
Despite all that, given the factor of transmitting and preserving the value, we cannot neglect the vital role of interpreter between the artists and the audience played by the critic. As The great France sculptor Rodin said “The world is full of the beauty unless we have a pair eyes to find it out.” the greatest critics are even rarer than the greatest artists. There is no better illustration than Vincent Van Gogh. This gifted impressionistic artist sold only one painting before his suicide at merely 37 years old. Few people recognized the great value of his paintings on his living until the great critic notice his artworks and introduce them to the public. Moreover, the critics sometimes are themselves great artists and an excellent artist should initially possess the fine taste of art as well as the ability of critical thinking. Like academic research, it is not uncommon to see that the greatest artists during the same period in history always established their own coterie, in which they not only created the artworks, but appreciated and criticized each other's works, thereby helping enrich the craftsmanship and ideas mutually in the process.
Admittedly, some incompetent critics may mislead the public and deter the revelation of the true artists in time, but it is universally acknowledged that the lasting value of the real art should stand the selection of time and the great critics alike.
To wrap up, it is the artist, who creates the wonderful artworks of great value. However, to eternalize the value, the role played by critics cannot be denied. The joint effort both from the artists and the critics contribute to the wonderful art forms.
