Are tradition and modernization mutually exclusive so that we have to choose one of the two, as the speaker contends? In order to better discuss this controversial issue, we ought to acquaint with the meanings of tradition and modernization. Tradition refers to beliefs, values, customs, patterns of thoughts, and etc. which were handed down from generation to generation; modernization, a popular yet a vague term, generally represents advanced theories, high-tech, and correspondingly updated notions and behaviors in the influence of them. Now concerning the question raised on the beginning, although I concede that tradition and modernization are at times contradictive, in most cases they can coexist peacefully, and that more interestingly modernization tends to add lively elements to traditional contents and synchronize them with the modern society.
Admittedly, with the development of science and technology and improvement of level of people’s understandings, some traditional heritages have been utterly abandoned. These notions or behaviors are totally incompatible to modern mainstream culture and impede the advances of the society. Influenced by people’s continuously extended knowledge of the nature, superstition originating from ignorance or from fear of the unknown has gradually been got rid of by modern people is the best exemplification to this point.
Nonetheless, in most aspects, tradition does not stand on the opposite side of modernization. They are closely interactive and interdependent, and can benefit each other. For one thing, tradition which consists of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual, emotional features can characterize a specific country or a social group and continuously to be a part of modern civilization. For supporting examples, one needs to look no further than traditional holidays in both oriental and western cultural. Today, almost all Chinese around the world return home and have their family reunion dinners celebrating Spring Festival, the most important festival in Chinese culture; in Christmas, westerners in the US, England and etc still enthusiastically participate in special holiday rituals in their homes and express best benedictions to their families and friends. Also some traditional virtues-such as caring for the young and respecting the old- are also advocated by modern people and thus constitute current value and moral system. Hence, these conventional customs and beliefs never fade their colors even facing the modernized society facilitated by powerful science and technology.
For another thing, as a famous proverb says, Rome cannot be built in a day, modern civilization also does not come into being from nil; it is formed by deeper and broader extension of a large number of contributions made by our ancestors. When investigating into two realms: science and arts, which are best representatives of other realms, we can get apt illustrations to this point. Today’s great breakthroughs in science, regardless of the theory of relativity, or genetics, all stand on the giant’s shoulder- that is to say, precursors’ endeavors. In art, many artists’ works greatly inherits previous people advantages and creatively develop their distinctive styles. Consider, for example, a form of pop-music, rock and roll, evolved from a black style known as rhythm and blues: songs with strong beats and provocative lyrics. Simply put, the flourishing developments of modern society lay their solid foundations on our predecessor’s outstanding attainments.
In addition, modernization often tends to seek a harmonious coexistence with tradition by increasing fashionable elements to it especially in many countries with magnificent culture. Return to the example Chinese traditional holiday, Spring Festival, mentioned in the second paragraph. With the emergency of advanced communication devices-such as mobile phones, Internet, conventional ways of paying a New Year call by people’s personal visit their friends has gradually been replaced by easily sending kindness short messages or exquisite electronic cards. Also in the Olympic Games that will be held in Beijing in 2008, the perfect combination of tradition and modernization is one of most primary goals we pursue. What we try to exhibit in the Olympic Games is an effective synthesis of Chinese traditional culture and high-tech gymnasiums.
All in all, even though sometimes tradition conflicts with modernization, in most cases they are closely linked with each other and coexist in compatible way. Moreover, what we need to do is to better synthesize them and make use of their complementary advantages to better serve us human beings.
