TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
The study of history actually places more emphasis on individuals than on the groups of people which also plays a critical role in history. However, the most efficient way to study history may be through the famous few.
When we look into historical books, nobody would doubt that the individuals are over emphasized by the historians since there are bibliographies of a huge amount of famous people. Also, lots of significant invents are owed to the famous few. The advantage of this is that it can set up examples for the citizens, who will be inspired by the heroes and may make great progress as well. However, the disadvantage of it also exists, for it can arouse the most inherent heroic instincts inside everybody, which can not be approved in the modern society since it's a world of cooperation and communication now. Anyone who decides to pursuit something all by himself will probably fail.
Actually, the most significant events and trends are due to the forgotten groups of people, and the famous few are merely the representative of the groups. In the scientific field, no one can obtain his result without the experience the anteceded scientists. Also, if a reform was to be undertaken, it must cater for the multitude otherwise it would not be implemented thoroughly, and the abortion would be the final result. Similarly, the revolution of a country could not be succeeded unless the majority of the citizens were inspired to overthrow the government. Obviously, the groups of people, no matter how minor they were, played an indispensable role in the history.
However, if we consider the issue as a historian, we may conclude that the study of the famous few is the most efficient method to comprehend the history. It would be a rather tough work to analyze the function of every minor group of people, and maybe it is impossible at all. Therefore, the representatives, the famous few, are picked out to be studied for the backgrounds of that particular period. More importantly, some of the groups are nearly forgotten, it is impossible for the historian to study them.
In the final analysis, the study of history should pay more attention to the groups of people which play the same role as the famous few, and all the historians should examine the history with a just mind. |
