What are the factors that contribute to becoming an effective leader? Some people claims that charismatic [这个词用得恰当啊.] leadership requires the public official [复数] to maintain the highest standards of ethics and morality. As far as I am concerned, it is true that effective leaders have to be careful that their behaviors are morally right, but on the other hand, always maintaining the highest ethical and moral criteria does not necessarily make them effective leaders.
To begin with, keeping the highest standards of ethics and morality is important for society and great leaders. For one thing, with moral principles, effective leaders always keep the social welfare rather than his self-interest at the first place. Nelson Mandela is a case in point. He devoted his life to the pursuit of social equality, fighting against the prevailed apartheid policies which were based on racial discrimination. Sentenced to life imprisonment though, he did not give up his dream and finally succeeded. Maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards, Mandela became one of the greatest [most respected/revered] leaders in the world. For another, meeting the highest standards of morality helps leaders to project a good image of themselves and thus can win people’s support and respect. Successful entrepreneurs [entreprenues不是public officials.] who are willing to help poor people are more respectable than those who shortsightedly focus on every dollar they earn but care nothing about others. Bill Gates, for example, is not only famous for his multibillion-business, but also his generous deeds of money donation and establishing charitable organizations. He himself then became the role model of thousands of people because of his success in career and his generosity.
[SORRY, 刚才搞错了. 是GATES, 不是CLINTON]
However, stubbornly obeying [OR: succumb to] the highest moral standards without any flexibility can also be a disaster to the leader himself and his citizens or subordinates. On diplomatic occasions, state leaders have to keep confidential military information to themselves, even tell lies sometimes to safeguard their nation’s military security. Telling everything they know is not the wise thing an effective leader should do. In the course of negotiations, some officials might pretend to be angry or deliberately build misunderstanding [mislead their opponents/counterparts] in order to strive for more benefits for their side, which are the basic strategies for skillful negotiators. These do not mean that they have to be dishonest, but to be effective, leaders have to learn to deal with different situations flexibly. Otherwise, they may not bring benefits but damages to the country or the organizations that they are leading.
Moreover, we have to bear in mind that leaders are not saint. They are just ordinary people with flesh and blood, people who have their own personal desires and human needs. It is extremely difficult for anyone including outstanding leaders to always maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. If a leader is truly competent in his work and skilled in leading others, a few scandals about his private life might not have too much negative influence on his becoming an effective leader. Most people know how to differentiate an official’s leadership from his lifestyles in private [private life]. [但是不可否认领导人是公众人物, 他们的一举一动都在人们的注视下, 他们的所做所为也会为人们所评价. 个人的misbehaviors很可能影响到他所在的政党或所代表的政治理念. 阿扁就是一个反面教材. ;P]
In conclusion, maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards contributes to effective leadership, but it does not necessarily make one an outstanding leader. To be an effective leader, one has to acquire other skills as well, such as negotiating and organizing with adequate flexibility. People should also give full understanding to leaders who cannot always meet the highest moral standards, for leaders are ordinary people. As long as leaders can fulfill his duty of serving people or leading his subordinates, they can be called effective leaders.
1. 对于What makes an effective leader作者似乎没有具体说明?
2. 能力 != 道德水准, 民众在选取政治领导人时, 虽然对其有其他方面的期待,
但更看重的还是领导能力, 参政水平. 道德楷模的作用可以由其他人才担当,
如教会或社区的负责人.
that's all. |
