Issue 7
The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation that written records.
提纲:
观点:视频影像无法取代书籍在记录历史上的作用
视频影像可以提供更生动的档案文件
由于时间和空间上的限制,视频影像有其局限性
书写记录可以更全面深刻地反映历史问题
With the rapid development of the video record technology, we have more and more information and documentation provided in a video form. Admittedly, video camera can indeed provide a vivid and accurate record of the outside world, and serve as an important way of historical recording. However, to my point of view, it can never replace the written record as the dominant form of documentation.
To begin with, with out a denying, video camera and other video implement and provide us a more vivid and direct documentation about the contemporary events. Owing to the invention of video camera, we get a direct and impressive observation of how cruel and brutal the World War two was by watching the video documentary. Perhaps, no book, however realistic it narrative is, can offer us such an impressive and real image as that of a documentary. With the help of the world famous documentary Le Peuple Mirgrateur, we know exactly the how great and hard the migration of the birds is. This documentary has endowed us a lively visual angle to perceive the miraculous lives in the nature. The vivid images, though with only few dialogues, have absolutely transcended any other narratives of written records.
However, admitted of the important role played by video documentation in recording contemporary life, we can not deny the fact that, written records are still serving as the dominant way of recording. For, in the first place, it is totally impossible for us to learn about the ancient times when there was no video camera at all by watching a real video documentation. Due to the limitation of the time and space, it is really hard for us to record a long period of history by using video camera. After all we can only record the most present and contemporary things that are happening at the same time as our existence.
Secondly, written documents can provide us more thorough and in-depth information of the history. By reading historical books and autobiographies of the famous figures in history, we can have a full and deep observation to the social and political background of the very era in history. The historians may find many unknown details by delving into the written record of the history. Although video technology can provide us a more direct and vivid information, sometimes, we the historians really want to know is the connotations and the in-depth meaning contained in the documentation which will probably be neglected by the photographers. In my point of view, here relied the value of history study. if everything about the history is clearly showed in the documentary, there will be no need of the historians in the society.
All in all, due to the time and space limitation of video recording, however vivid and realistic it is, it can never take the place of written records. Only through the study of the written documentations can we learn about systematically and thoroughly about the history. |
