Generally I agree with the assertion that no field of study can achieve significant goals unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience although the speaker seems to be a little too extreme. Admittedly, there do exist some fields that don't necessarily need other fields' help; yet most have benefit a lot from the communication with other fields.

Many great scientific explorations have verified the importance of outsiders who have brought in their knowledge and experience. Natural sciences, such as physics and chemistry, have been developing for hundreds of years with their pure theories quite mature. Scientists and researchers are borrowing methods of thinking and equipment of experimenting from others of different majors to stimulate their inspirations. For instance, Watson, the biologist, had been interested in and studying DNA structure. However, he lacked the necessary physical skills to analyze some properties of DNA. Thanks to the crucial collaboration and help from the physicist Crick, the beautiful double helix structure of DNA revealed itself in front of the world and the two partner scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize. Except biology, astromony, a field which the government has put considerable concern and funds in, is a complicated one to which physicists, geologists and machine engineers can make great contributions. Hence the communications and interactions have gained more and more emphasis in the world today.

Moreover, communications between different fields of study have lent effective support to the disciplines of humanity, such as politics, history and literature. In order to be a successful politician or political scholar, one must have the knowledge of economics, public hygiene, foreign affairs, and even military arrangements. Also, a historian is not a person who can only recites the chronicles fluently. He or she must have profound understanding of literature and arts, and at the same time discreet logical reasoning. Without these necessary abilities and skills, he or she is unable to interpret the historic findings or bring about convincing explanations. For a writer, the top purpose is to make the hero more attractive and charming and the story more vivid and interesting. Different heroes and stories require the writer to taste and understand different cultures, occupations and life styles. A good writer is always welcome to the kaleidoscopic knowledge.

To be more comprehensive, I concede that some fields do not take the knowledge and experience from outside as a necessity. Take mathematics as an example. A mathematician, especially who favors or majors in algebra or topology, can give out graceful equations and demonstrations with only a pen, enough paper, and the brain. But it should be recognized that this kind of cases belongs to the minority.

In sum, it often offers illuminations and helps to bring knowledge and experience from other fields. Although not every case and every discipline need so, I believe that more communications and interactions will definitely bring us more surprises and advances.
