48The following appeared in a newspaper article published in the country of Corpora.
"Twenty years ago, one half of all citizens in Corpora met the standards for adequate physical fitness as then defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness. Today, the board says that only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit and suggests that spending too much time using computers may be the reason. But since overall fitness levels are highest in regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are also highest, it is clear that using computers has not made citizens less physically fit. Instead, as shown by this year's unusually low expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause, and fitness levels will improve when the economy does."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that the economy influence the fitness level of citizens in Corpora .In order to support the conclusion, the arguer points out that the physical fitness of citizen declined during twenty years, he also cites that using computer is not the reason influence the physical fitness. Finally, he mentioned that citizens spend less on fitness-related products and service due to declined economy. However, this conclusion is not persuasive and convincing as it stands.
In the first place, the arguer unfairly assumes the low expense on fitness products and services due to the declined economy.Commen sense informs us that there are many factors could influence the sale of commodities, such as price, style, and service. It is highly possible that the price of fitness products are so expensive that few people would like to purchase these products.Or perhaps the style of these products are obsolete, or service is bad.Without ruling out these possibilities, the assumption is not well supported.
In the second place, even assuming the low expense on fitness products and service, the arguer provides no evidence that the fitness level have direct relationship with the fitness products. It is possible that although people buy these fitness products, the busy work oppcupy them too much time and they seldom utilize these fitness products to do physical exercise. In addition, even assuming people frequently use the fitness products, the arguer provide no information that all these products and service could improve the fitness of citizens.Perhaps these products and service improve the fitness not so obviously, so in this way the fitness of the citizen have no direct relationship with the fitness products and service.
In the third place, the mere fact that computer ownership is highest in regions of Corpora where levels of overall fitness is also highest could not prove using computers has not made citizens less physically fit.Perhaps using computers did make citizens less physically, but the residents in that region have the inclination to doing exercise frequently or they have healthy diet habits counteract the detrimental effect the computer bring to them.Without taking into account these factors, the conclusion is not reliable.
Finally, the arguer fails to consider other factors which could influence the fitness of citizen in Corpora. The air condition, pollution caused by the factories, the diet all could influence the fitness of local citizen.Perhaps the air condition in Corpora is so bad,or the pollution is serious, all these possibilities are detrimental to the fitness of citizens in Corpus.
In sum,the conclusion is not convincing. To strengthen it,the arguer needs to prove that there is definite relationship between the economy and fitness of citizens. To evaluate the conclusion, the arguer needs to prove reliable information about using computers would not influence the fitness of peole, and the arguer needs to convince that no other factors influence the fitness of citizens in Corpora. |
