题目:ISSUE 185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-
can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker
or reformer ever could."
Some people believe that scandals in politics, academia, or other areas
are more useful to focus our attention on problems than speakers or
reforms. In my opinion, such assertion is partly correct. Though scandals
really appeal to modern people, only by them is it nearly impossible to
gain the society's long term attention.
With the development of modern society, information explodes and there
are so many things we don't quite understand, and are so far away from us.
To such specific news that we can't catch actually, how can people show
their interests and focus on them a lot? What attract our attention is
usually what we are most familiar, which usually leads us to think the
problem. So, few people will focus on the specific problems in a specific
area that only someone are familiar with. But, scandals, showing
the problems in a particular way, are easily to attract ordinary people's
attention. Scandals make the problems more interesting, and even more
acceptable, for they don't care much about the boring reason for the
problems, but only a wonderful story shown in the same period and maybe not
far away from us. We see these scandals as stories, and find something
interest to make fun, in this mean, scandals usually can attract more
attention of ordinary people.
Though scandals really can gain more attention, they mislead us not to
the problems behind them, but just the surfaces. What appeals to people is
the interesting stories, not a serious discussion of the problems, so though
people focus on the scandals, seldom will they think of the problems. For
instance, Bill Clinton, the former president of the American, was found
having keep specific relationship with some women, and even had a case for
this, but most people just look this as a story within a hero and several
heroines. They hadn't think about what problem was reflected, or what the
primary reason for the president did such kind of things. So scandals can't
lead us to the problem, but just attract our attention.
Sometimes, just to advertise something, scandals are made on purpose. Such like some popular music stars, who are not so focused by the media, maybe make a scandal on purpose to let the world know their existence. These are rather boring, and have no worth to gain attention, for we are cheated.
Problems, shown in the way that not only easily to be understated, but
also lead us to think deeply, can gain effective focus of the public, and
even scandals play an important role in attracting society's attention,
other means should be associated, and the problems themselves should be
worth to focus our attention.
