152. "The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies."
公司的经营者们唯一的责任就是在法律规定范围之内为他们的公司赚尽可能多的钱。
提纲:
1、赚钱很重要;
2、为社会作贡献也很重要;
3、不能光顾赚钱。
Is making money as much as possible for their companies the only responsibility for corporate executives? The speak claims so, and I partly agree his view. While making money as much as possible is important for executives, it is not the only one, and successful executives should consider more than making money and hold higher ideal to make contribution to our society.
In the first place, I concede that making as much money as possible for their companies within the law is very important for corporate executives. For the direct aim of running a company is to earn money as much as possible, and as the leader of their companies, they should try their best to lead their employees pursuing this aim. When talking to many successful corporate executives, for example, Bill Gates, who is now a household name, people always link him to his great contribution to Microsoft, to the wealth he create for himself and his employees. It is obvious that under his leadership, Microsoft gains so much wealth and grows into the biggest company in the realm of making soft. So, for successful executives, making as much money as possible for their companies is very important.
In the second place, while earning as much benefit as possible for their corporations is an important responsibility for corporate executives, it is not the only one. Besides holding the practical view of making money, outstanding executives should extend their view far beyond the short-term goal of maximizing profit to an ultimate aim of making contribution to the society. Bill Gates once was asked how he could keep maintaining so much energy to work when he was already rich enough. He answered that everyday, when he got up, he recognized that the job he and his employees did would make a great contribution to human, and then he would feel much exited. So, for those true successful executives, besides making money they must hold their own ideals which are related to the benefit of their companies in the long run and keep their companies competitive.
Today, for most people, the measure they use to evaluate executives is simply judging how much benefit they bring to their companies. It is unilateral. And if corporate executives always consider how to make as much benefit as possible, then they are likely to turn into machines which only know making money, they might ignore relationships to their friends, even to their relatives, and if it turns out to be such case, they might do something harmful to their closest people, as an illustration, they might cheat their nearby people, motivated by making use of them to earn money. Moreover, they will disobey the basic principle of morality.
In sum, I concede that making as much money as possible for their companies within the law is very important for corporate executives, but it is not the only one. Besides holding the practical view of making money, outstanding executives should extend their view to an ultimate aim of making contribution to the society. And if one only focuses on making money, it is harmful for not only himself but also for his nearby people. |
