第七次作业
Issue144
144."It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

“Those who can, do it; those who can not, teach it; those who can not even teach, criticize it.” This some kind of unfairly joking saying actually reflects a controversial topic—who gives the society those lasting values, regarding the art, novels and other works. Although the artists should naturally be considered to be the contributor, we should not ignore the great efforts those critics have done.

Almost no one would argue that it is those artists who create these material things such as novels, music, films, and paintings, and at the same time, give them the spirit that worth keeping for centuries or for ever. A character in the painting might record a great moment or symbolize a tremendous reformation in history; a literature work would give us a vivid and precious depiction of that period in terms of its politics, economy and people’s daily life. Gone With the Wind, a best seller ever in American history which later was made into a movie describes the life of people in the southern America before and during the civil war, a period that witnessed the most turbulent change in American history and a war that remarked the real unification and a start of development of this great nation. Only through the hands of the author Margaret can we see the great time and great people again, which would otherwise be unfairly forgotten after centuries.

However, the artists do not in fact give out those lasting values hidden in their works to the society only by themselves in that they expressed their thoughts in the work without considering whether the society could be aware of this, or even the artists themselves had not come to realize the value of their own creation. Almost all these jobs are done by the critics. They evaluate a literature work from the aspects of its structure, words, rhetoric and the settings as well as the characters in it, and then gives out their understanding of the whole work, which may enlighten the otherwise confused or puzzled readers. And they praise a painting through the religious meaning it might carry, the mystical symbols it used and the strokes that reveals the painter’s soul. In Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night and serial of Sunflowers, critics taste out a feeling and expression of movement through the special streams of strokes and in Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, they seek out many mathematical features, thus distinguish these works from other mediocre ones and their evaluations lead to an increasing awareness among the society of the great values those masterpieces carry, which can not be done only through their makers.

What is more, as an old saying goes: the outsiders can see the games, the critics not only tell the distinguished part of the art works, but also some immature or imperfect part in it, which then could give some advise to or even inspire the artist in his/her works, thus they together make out the masterpiece with ever lasting value. The famous director Michelangelo Antonioni’s films may furnish a good example. Being both an artist and critic himself, Antonioni takes the critics about his moving shots seriously and made a change which then grew into his famous cinematographic style—lengthy tracking shots to show the isolation of the character which is presented perfectly in his Red Desert, a method then being used in countless movies. From the view of artists, critics often play the role of good counselors albeit you have to percolate their suggestions.

In conclusion, artists are the people who produce the work possessing the value and leave it to the society, while the critics raise the recognition and awareness of people towards the masterpiece, and through this way they together contribute to the ever lasting values we now enjoy today.

However, the artists do not in fact give out those lasting values hidden in their works to the society only by themselves in that they expressed their thoughts in the work without considering whether the society could be aware of this, or even the artists themselves had not come to realize the value of their own creation这个后面好像没有体现. Almost all these jobs are done by the critics. They evaluate a literature work from the aspects of its structure, words, rhetoric and the settings as well as the characters in it, and then gives out their understanding of the whole work, which may enlighten the otherwise confused or puzzled readers.
