TOPIC: ISSUE207 - "Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."

What is the definition of culture? Different people have different opinions on this issue. Generally speaking, Culture is the interior or exterior manifestation of people's behavior modes. Of course, it includes many aspects of people's life. In my point of view, we can study a culture through rituals and ceremonies which can help define it. I fundamentally agree with the assertion that people will have a diminished sense of who they are without rituals and ceremonies.

To begin with, different countries have different cultures, therefore, different countries have different rituals and ceremonies since they are one of the most important aspects which help to define a culture. Usually, an individual can live in the atmosphere of only one culture in that he/she just can live in one country at some period of his/her life. During this period, he/she is influenced by the country unique ways of life including the rituals and ceremonies. We can easily distinguish a person's nationality through the rituals or ceremonies he/she participates. Take the ceremony of wedding for example. A typical Chinese wedding have complicated procedures. Before the formal wedding ceremony begins, the bridegroom must take the bride-price to the bride's mother's home to take the bride to his own home. On the wedding, bride and bridegroom have to drink a lot of wine with their relative. Besides, people who attend the wedding usually make fun of them to achieve a climax of the wedding. Situation is quite different when it comes to the wedding in western country such as the United States. In America, the wedding is quite simple. During the wedding ceremony, what the bride and bridegroom need to do is just going to the church, promising the belief in their marriage under the guide of priest, and have a dinner. From these two distinct ceremony we can see the different cultures of two country.

Moreover, the rituals and ceremonies can give people a sense of belonging. Only when people are classified into certain group and at the same time they take part in  some rituals or ceremonies can they feel no longer lonely and have a clear sense of who they are. For instance, during the dragon boat festival in China, Chinese people in many places hold a match for dragon boat and throw some dumping made of glutinous rice into the river in memory of the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan. On that day, all the Chinese will get a deeper comprehension of Chinese culture and feel more sincerely that we are the descendants of the same ancestor. Also, even when a Chinese goes abroad for study or some other purpose, he/she will not forget to celebrate Chinese festivals in a traditional way when they can not return home. It is a method to miss his/her homeland to which he/she really belong.

In conclusion, not only rituals and ceremonies help define a culture, but they also make people aware of what belong to and who actually they are.
即使遇到不如意,也要善待自己,善待父母,朋友,我们每一个人都是为爱而生的.

Besides, people who attend the wedding usually make fun of them to achieve a climax of the wedding.
