TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.
WORDS: 328 (429)         TIME: 0:27:00          DATE: 2006-8-10

The author recommend in this argument that dentists should focus their advertisement on the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and additional attention towards nervous patients. To support his assertion, the author cites that men are more likely to faint during the visit to dentists’. However, the author's recommendation is problematic in several aspects.

To begin with, the credibility of the statistics collected from dentists is open to doubt. The author fails to provide any detailed information about the survey. How many dentists respond to the survey? Where are their clinics? Are the patients representative to all patients? Without these data, the author can not convince me the survey is statistically reliable, therefore any conclusion obtain from this survey is unsubstantiated.

Even assuming the survey is credible as it stands, the author can not derive his conclusion that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work than women from the mere fact that there are three times more men faint at the dentists' than women. There are other factors contribute to men's higher number of fainting. It is entirely possible that total number of male patients is much higher than that of female patients, as a result the rate of men who faint is actually lower than the rate of women, which indicates the exact opposite situation. It is also possible that some medicine used in the process caused the faint of men patients who are sensible to them. If either is the case, the author's assertion that men are more distressed is nonsensical.

Finally, even if men are more like to faint because of nervousness, the author's recommendation of advertisement can not assure financial success. What is the demographic status of dentists' patients? If majority of them are women and children, the ads targeting the male consumer can not be attractive and successful. Even assuming male patients are the main consumers, there is no evidence to show that anesthetic techniques and sensitivity towards nervous patients are their main concern. The professional ability of dentists, efficacity of treatment and previous fame may weigh a lot in patients’ decision. Under this circumstance, advertisement which is aimed at male consumers and emphasizing anesthetic techniques will not suffice to ensure success.

In sum, the author’s recommendation is based on unwarranted evidence, which renders it unconvincing. To better support his assertion, the author need to provide cogent evidence to substantiate the fact men are more nervous during dental treatment and easier to faint. He/she also need to provide detailed information on what are the main concerns when people choose a dentist.

[发现咱们攻击的错误几乎一样;
