212. "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable." 212. 只要一个目标是值得去实现的,那么任何努力都是有理由的。
outline:1是人心理想出来自己骗自己的或者是某些统治者达到私人欲望的借口,很少有完全客观有理由的方法
2 goal worthy for one must intervene the other’s interest: relatively justifiable:虽然迢迢大路通罗马,eg. Murder robbery theft
3甚至goal worthy for people in the world: atomic bomb, war
4 so comes the law and regulations however, should still alert to the actions of those in power in the name of a goal worthy doing contemptible things

Frequently, we hear the saying that if a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable, which is a seemingly justifiable assertion made up by some people to give themselves an illusion in order to forgive themselves or is used as an excuse for some leaders to abuse their power. However, whether the goal is worthy is hard to judge and the ways to attain that goal are always deeply involved in controversial.

In a society full of competition and a complex interest net, a goal worthy for one person always leads to the intervention of other people’s interest, thus the methods one adopts to reach that goal can at best be subjectively, but hardly objectively justifiable. However, people have a tendency to consider their interest more than others and are boxed up to see the overall situation, then comes the criticism of their wrongdoings in the process to obtain their own goals. The goal of surviving, a basic human rights, may be the worthies goal for one to hold in the world. Yet in the society, someone will adopt the way of theft, robbery or even murder to reach that most reasonable aim, which is totally unjustifiable not only for the victims, but also for the damaged humanity. And in a company, one has to survive in the power competition, thus comes the endless blarney and plots, which is unacceptable for any decent man.

Moreover even when the goal is not sought in the interest of an individual, but the interest of people in general, such as world peace, the methods we used to adopt are still worthy reconsidering. Peace is a dream people hold for thousands of years, even in the primitive time when people have to fight for foods and the supplies in order to go through the winter safely, they find a way to share their goods to restore the peace. However, from 3000 years ago since history has been recorded, not a single year is there no armed conflict or war, most of which happened in the name of the restoration of peace and the interest of one country’s people. These methods are always controversial rather than justifiable. During World War II, in order to confront Nazi and other fascists, people in almost all other nations turned to the arms and tried to use one war to finish the other. Then the atomic bomb “little boy:” was thrown above the sky of Hiroshima, killing 70’000 people, followed with “fat man”, killing 40,000 people in Ogasama, and finally leaded to the surrender of Japan as to call an end to this terrible war. In retrospect, if America did not throw the bombs, the war might go on, resulting in more casualties, therefore, for the people around the world, it is justifiable. Yet this assumption could not keep us from thinking about those people killed and injured or infected by the bomb in Japan, whether it could make any reason for them? Maybe the answer is no, since most of them are only the innocent civilians who do not deserve the suffering.

People also aware of this contradiction when we attain a somewhat worthy goal, so comes the laws and regulations to restrain people’s behavior and countries’ actions. Every country has its constitution to ban the wrongdoings of people in an attempt to damage others’ interests and the world has the law such as Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons(NPW) to prevent the same disaster from reoccurring and held Geneva Conference to control arms all around the world. Nevertheless, people should always alert to those leaders and individuals in power who in the name of the overall interest to adopt the wrongdoings in order to satisfy their own desire and craving. Sir Acton once said, extreme power leads to extreme corruption. Adolf Hitler thought his goal of purity could rejuvenate the Germany, a goal worthy any kind of method, then comes the massacre of millions of Jews and the most terrible war in history.

No one could judge whether the goal is worthy enough to adopt a certain method to attain, however, only history has the saying.
