In any realm of life—whether academic, social, business, or political—the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options.

In today's society, in which resources are being more and more scarce and competitions are being more and more drastic, increasing people tend to emphasize the pragmatic behavior and ignore the idealistic views in almost every realm of life, including academic, social, business, political and so forth. As far as I am concerned, however, I believe that we should drive with the pragmatic behavior as the driver while the idealistic views as the director, and that neither of them should be ignored.
On one hand, anyone who dare to make light of the reality is destined to be the loser. In order to survive in the elimination game of our society, we need not only absolutely realize the actual conditions, but also adequately adjust to them accordingly. Take, for example, the Chinese economy. 28 years ago, a regulated economic policy, which copied mechanically from Russia and obviously lacking consideration of the Chinese specific conditions, used to be adopted and finally resulted in economic stagnation, starvation and social disturbance. Given enough realization of the reality, adjustment------ the economic liberation was proceeded and has been proved greatly successful. According to a recent survey, made by the Chinese government, the GDP now is almost four times as much as that before the economic liberation, and what's more, it is increasing with a rate of approximately 10 percentages per year.
On the other hand, however, we should not ignore, play down, or even erase the idealistic views, without which, our struggle to survive might well be thoughtless, rash, or even blind. A case in point is the industrial pollution. With profit as their main objective, most companies operate in a practical way and might not be willing to take great effort to dispose their pollution, since this effort may be opposite to their pursuit of the current profit. However, the increasingly aggravating pollution they made has resulted in a series of problems, such as the global warming, the disappearance of the rain forest and the extinction of wildlife species. This tendency, if permitted to continue without direction of idealistic views, will not only be disadvantageous to the development of the companies, but also surely lead to problems that are more serious. Perhaps, the next species going to be extinct will be human.
Everything considered, we should synthesize pragmatic behavior and idealistic views together. Admittedly, pragmatic behavior is more effective in getting the short-term profit. However, it is often thoughtless in the long term. Although idealistic views are less effective in getting the immediate profit, they are usually good director toward the final success. The only way to get the real success is to strike a proper balance between pragmatic behavior and idealistic views.
