TOPIC: ISSUE87 - "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
WORDS: 502 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-8-16
As the arguer claims that the beginner is more likely than the expert to make significant discoveries, I agree that green hand have advantages, but it does not mean that experts, full of experience, cannot discover more. And then, if researchers hold both enthusiasm like beginners and profession accumulation like experts, they could receive much more fabulous achievement in their research.
Firstly, beginners are always enthusiastic youths with ambition and brevity, which sometimes might produce accidents and surprises. And, as we know, there are many inventions are cultivated by accidents, since only by carelessness may some key point be changed. Then the whole research is changed immediately. For instance, in our chemistry lab, a professor have been focusing on one reaction for long time, but he cannot get any further development, for the needed catalyst to accelerate this reaction cannot be discovered. One day, a student fell asleep when he was required to supervise the reaction. In contrary to failure, surprise occurs when he wake up, the reaction had finished. Then they found out the significant reason that because of the heat step did not stop in time, the temperature rose very high, and in such high-temperature condition, reaction developed fast. That is to say, such careless student contributes a lot ultimately.
Secondly, when we admit that beginners are able to bring exceptional result, we have to know clearly that experts are the most powerful participations in research. They have sufficient experience, whatever success or failure is always useful. Additionally, through those experiences they can determine what to be given up and what to be continued and they can also discover a more efficient method to solve a problem among numbers of solutions. For example, Freud, the most famous psychology developed his psycho-analysis approach for the treatment of psychological and emotional disorders from a long-term observations and communication with patients. Moreover, during his early life, using most time to learning basic knowledge of psychology also help him a lot. Therefore, experts, who spent much time in one field, own more information and consideration about it, and then more possibilities of success will occur.
Finally, as all the above, in one hand, both beginner and experts own different advantages in different aspects. In the other hand, they both have inevitable disadvantages. For the beginner, they almost cannot have insight of problems, since they are too young to accumulate more, while experts are more sophisticated. For the respectful experts, they always lack of feasibility and think in fixed ways, for they have their own complete system of thinking and concluding, while green hand are more creative and feasible. Thus a research group including experts as leaders and beginners as subordinates, just like many research group organized in university by professors and students, is a better choose. When they play different roles in groups, and help each others, more creations will be cultivated.
To sum up, beginners and experts with their own advantages and disadvantages should cooperate when needed, and only in this way can they contribute most. |
