ÌâÄ¿£ºARGUMENT 38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

By showing some facts, the arguer concludes that daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism. At the first glance, the argument seems reasonable. However, through close consideration, we can see how groundless the argument is.
First of all, the fact that people visit the doctor rarely in the place where fish consumption is very high, does little indication to the assumption that fish is good for recovering from colds. There is no obvious link between eating fish and health. No information shows the reason why people there rarely go to visit doctor. It is probably that the place they live is well conditioned and people live there are healthier than people living in other place. Also they may be too poor to visit doctor, in a result most of them are suffering colds. Or they have their own treatment to deal with colds with no need to visit doctors. In this case, we can see that fish consumption does nothing to cure colds.
Secondly, although colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, colds may not the real reason for absences. As we know, most of students ask for absence to enjoy themselves. Wanting to escape from hard work, most of students often make excuse to teacher to ask for absence. One of the good excuses is getting colds. So colds becomes the best and the common excuse of absences. Also, employees also use getting colds to get a several days release. So we can see that although most individuals ask for absences by the reason that they have got colds, in fact, most of them do not really get colds what they really want is to get some days to release.
Finally, even if most people ask for absences is truly because they have got cold, the suggestion that the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism is not substantiated. As the arguer states that eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds, there is no certain that only eating Ichthaid can also prevent colds. No survey shows what elements in the fish are so effective in curing colds. Probably fish oil does nothing to prevent colds, no matter do Ichthaid, which is just a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil.
To sum up, the argument suffers many flaws, which greatly weakens the arguer's conclusion. So the argument is not convincing. To best support his or her suggestion, he or she should provide more information to show that what element of fish exactly affects curing colds, and whether Ichthaid is a good pill to prevent colds and find out the real reasons most people for absences. |
