In today's society, scholars and researchers play an important role in the development and progress. Their work directly impulse and decide the direction of our society. The speaker asserts that they should not be concerned with whether their work makes contribution to the large society, but whether they pursue their individual interests, no matter however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests might be. However, in my opinion, though interest is one important thing for the study and research conducted by scholars and researchers, the main goal of their work is to benefit our large society to keep developing.
Admittedly, it is important for a scholar or researcher to show interests in their domain of study. As Einstein once said (and I paraphrased): "Interests are the best teacher", if one can not find it hard to be attracted by his study or research, it is very difficult for him/her to achieve success. The great inventor Thomas Edison devoted himself into inventions by his great interest. With desire to improve light bulb to give a moderate amount of light and be used for longer time, he tried sixteen thousand materials before the last discovery of high-resistance carbon-thread filament. Without the support of such interests, one may give up at any time—let alone about hundreds of attempt. Also, without interest, Faraday's discovery of electromagnetic induction which cost him eleven years would not be made, and the famous mathematical Fermat’s Last Theorem would not be solved by Andrew Wiles since the study used all his time in Princeton University just because to solve the theorem is a dream from his childhood. While if one is asked to finish the task he or she has no interests in, it would only be a sheer waste of time instead of an effective study or research.
However, interests can not be abused and must stay inside the bottom line of ethics and morality. It is true that a scientist can gain great success under their individual interests, but excessively interests that even disobey our ethical and moral standards would become disasters. On the one hand, some researches that cause ethics problems will bring chaos to human society. Take stem cell research into consideration. Many people are against it for the reason that this research provide possibility to produce children genetically exactly the same as the one who denote their cells, which could cause a series of ethical controversy since the two person share same gene so that can not be identified who is the “real one” by current human technologies. One the other hand, even if some researches have good aspects, misuse of them under individual’s interest other than moral standards, would lead the world into calamities. Nuclear weapons so horrible that can kill millions of people in couple of minutes as well as bring catastrophic environmental pollutions. If such researches are conducted by some scientists who have "unusual or idiosyncratic" ideas, the world will soon be a place of debris.
Still, there are many other goals for scholars and researchers to pursue and most important one is concerned with the contribution to whole human society. The main aim/purpose of study completed by scholars and researchers are to provide their results for the development of human society. Hence, it is much more important than interests since interests only provide possibility to do work better while the correct direction of contribution concerns about the future of human beings. Look back to the examples aforementioned. Stem cell research can also be used to save patient who suffered from cancers and some other severe diseases by transplant tissues or organs grown from stem cell, which would be a great help to the whole human society. And good exploit of nuclear under control to generate power could greatly release the crisis of energy in today’s world. Accordingly, if we pursue the contribution to the larger society, the study and research would be more beneficial.
To sum up, though interest is an important factor in scholars and researchers' work since it brings more enthusiasm and passion for their study, yet it can not be conclude as the most important one in guiding the direction of research. By concerning comprehensive benefit of contribution to the larger society, scholars and researchers would greatly impulse our society's progress and achieve better development.

In today's society, scholoars and researchers play an important role in the social development. Their work directly impulse and decide the direction of progresses. The speaker asserts that they should not be concerned with whether their work makes contribution to the large society, but whether they pursue their individual interests, no matter however unusual or idiosyncratic those interets might be. However, in my opinion, though the interests are one important thing for the study and research conducted by scholars and researchers, the main goal of their work is to benefit our large society to keep developing.
Admittedly, it is important for a scholor or researcher to show interests in their domain of study. As Eienstain once said (and I paraphrased) : "Interests are the best teacher", if one can not find something that attract him or her from his study or research, it is very difficult for him/her to achieve success. The great inventor Thomas Adison devote himself into the experiments of light bulb just because of his personal dream that one day people could enjoy light without candles and torches. Without the support of such interests, he could not succeed after so many times of failure and a final success at the last attempt after 10 years of the first experiment. The same thing exist on so many famous scientists : Fradi's discovery of magnielectronic theory after years of experients and mathematician Andrewson's great work in solving the Format Assumption just based on his ambition from childhool are all good examples to illustrate that interests can guide scholars and researchers to their last achievements. While if one is asked to finish the task he or she have no interests in, it would only be an pure waste of time instead of a effective study or research.
However, interests can not be abused and must stay away from the ethics and moral base line. It is true that a scientist can gain great success under their individual interests, but accessively interests that even break our ethics and moral base line would become disasters. On the one hand, some researchs that cause ethics problems will result in chaos of the human society. Take stem cell research into consideration. Many people are against it for the reason that this research gives possibility to produce children genetically exactly the same as the one who denote their stem cells which could cause a series of ethical problems since the two person share same gene so that can not be identified by human technologies. One the other hand, even if some research have good aspect, but if the research are guide through only interest other than moral standards, the world would fall into trouble. Nuclear are be used as energe but also can be developed to weapons which can kill millions of people in couple of minutes and bring catastrophic environmental pollutions. If such researchs are conducted by some scientists who have "unusual or idiosyncratic" ideas, the world will soon be a place of debris.
Still, there are many other goals for scholars and researchers to pursue and some of some concerned with contribution to whole human society, are even more important than their own interests. The main goal of study and research by scholars and researchers are to provide their result for the development of human society. Hence, this is the most important thing for scholoars and reaserachers to pursue in their work. Look back to the examples aforementioned. Stem cell research can also be used to save patient who suffered from cancers by transplant tissues or organs from the stell cell, which would be can great contribution to the whole human society. And good exploxit of nuclear power could greatly release the crisis of energy in the world. Accordinly, if we pursue the contribution to the larger society, the study and research would be more benefit.
Accordingly, though interests are important in scholars and researchers' work since it be bring more ethusiasm and passion for their study, yet it can be conclude as the most important factor in guiding the direction of research. By concerning more of the whole benefit of contribution to the larger society, scholars and reasearchers would greatly impulse our society's progress and development. |
