bTOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 558 TIME: 上午 12:45:00 DATE: 2006-10-19
The author asserts that education which is specifically designed to satisfy the individual needs and interests of each student is only effective. In my viewpoint, the claim is overstated when it ignore some respects, which prevent the program carrying out. I have several reasons to refute the author.
Admittedly, student-centered education is a effective way in learning process of involve the needs and the interests of each student. It will sufficiently stimulate the students' potential talents to achieve the success, because it meets the individual needs and interests of each student and offer society talents in various specific areas. However the price of student-centered education is too high that the governments cannot afford. Moreover, the profit might not reach the level the governments expected. Because students do not have enough experience and sufficient judgment to make a decision in what they want to learn and what will be useful in future. To compare with the student-centered education, traditional teacher-centered education might be more effective.
For the first place, consider the limitation of education resource in the world, the author's claim seems idealistic. Differenet students have different needs and different interests. On balance, we have not sufficient education resources to satisfy every student's variety requirement all over the world. The number of teachers, the average teaching level, and the education facilities, cannot allow us to conduct student-centered education.
For the second place, traditional teacher-centered education has its own advantage, for it can reach the most requirement of major students in general. Lower-grade students in school can learn the basic knowledge which is the fundamental of the future learning. And meanwhile parents might know the kids' circumstance in school through the unified norms established by the nation, such as the marks or evaluations. Moreover they can gradually recognize which fields they interests in and which respects of knowledge they need, that will better for them to plan the future. And traditional teacher-centered education plays an important role in cultivating the learning method in childhood, and forming good thinking path, both of which are useful in people whole life.
Admittedly, traditional teacher-centered education might unify the students' characters. Learning the same knowledge, mastering the same technology, making the same plan, or applying the same job, the traditional education has its' own disadvantage. However our governments make great efforts to improve the quality of education, make students devise in various area. For example, schools in high grade and universities make curriculum rich and varied in order to satisfy the different appetites of students. Nowadays, we are asked to reach course credits respectively in elective courses and required courses. In elective courses, we can make choice by ourselves depending on our individual needs and interests. In required courses, we are force to learn what is required. In general, the advantage is more weighted than the disadvantage in teacher-centered education.
To sum up, consider the actual situation of the country, net student-centered education is not unfeasible as a only effective way, for no country can afford the price to meet the individual needs and interests of each students all over the country. A more effective way is not to only meet the general requirement but also meet the individual needs and interest in some extent. Government should better integrate the student-centered education into traditional teacher-centered education and strake a balance between both of them. |
