According to the statement, artist but not critic gives society something of lasting value. In my view, it is too extreme to neglect the function of critics, since they also play an important part in the art domain, as it is artist who provides works, as well as critic brings them to the society and make them valuable. Moreover, besides artists and critics, public also devote to the development of art.
To the society, arts often mean entertainment, beauty and sign of social concerns and ideas. All of such influences are not just a progress of creating, they ask for explanation.. In the progress that arts interact with society, artists admittedly play roles as creators and fundament. Without artists, we will have no art works, including novels, films, music, painting, etc. However, consider when an art work is finished, its value to the society can not be seen directly, in many situations. In that sense, the art work will become as valueless and failure. The art works often contain the artists' idea and perception under their forms, and such idea and perception which can devote to the society need critics to understand and express. Take the Falling Water Villa, the most popular building in USA, for instance, the building was designed by Frank Loyd Wright, but its value has exuded during the 70 years after its construction, due to the critics who experienced its space, its form and publicized it as well as recording it into architecture history.
On the other hand, critics do not only introduce the art works to public, but ultimately create and develop a standard to understand the art works. Whether a piece of art work is valuable sometimes cannot be recognized by public easily. The Van Gogh's paintings, for instance, did not become popular when he was alive. That is because the standard of his period did not take his works as valuable. But the critics found the struggling emotion and passionate colors expressed by his works, which created a new way of painting art, and made the value of his works known by the world, after his death for many years. To contrast, some artists without much skill and creation may provide some art works with no value to the society, or even harmful. Such bad works may confused many people, but critics can make us get away from them properly.
Moreover, since the art is directed at the public, and its social value can only be reflected by the people who benefit from it, all of our citizens can obtain lasting value from art. In other words, the public is the most powerful critic. Return to Falling Water Villa mentioned above, it is true that the critics admitted its value and publicize it to public, but such critique is based on the good influence to society. Only after the survey of American favorite building is taken and studied by critics, Falling Water Villa's value is accurately concluded. And only when more and more people go there to experience Falling Water Villa's charm, its value is well confessed. Without the society, it is meaningless to talk about art works' values.
To sum, both artist and critic are necessary for art works to leave the society something of lasting value, either of them can deal with the issue independently, since art is not just a matter of creating and producing. Fundamentally, it is our common people who receive the value, as well as we take it with our own options. |
