1.        No doubt that the artist’s creativity gives the society something of lasting value.
2.        The critic’s comments also have great contribution to the public.

TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
----------------------------------------------------

This statement asserts that the artist gives society something of lasting value while the critic not. I do not quite agree with this assertion. In my opinion, both the artist and the critic have great contribution to the society.

It is no doubt that the artist's gives the society something of lasting value. They are creative, ingenious, and erudite. All these above are the difference from the public. They play the role in the society as the scientists do in the scientific areas. The famous painter van Gogh, Dutch postimpressionist painter, has created many works which are characterized by bold, rhythmic brush strokes and vivid colors. No body else could leave such wonderful paints for our world, because no body else has van Gogh’s inspiration. So, the artists’ works is usually something of lasting value due to their unique minds and instant afflatus.

However, the critic’s criticisms also have great contribution to both the public and the artists. When we see an art work, we usually could see the criticisms beside it. The criticisms are something of lasting value as well as the art work itself.

Firstly, critics can help us understand and interpret art. A critic who is familiar with a particular artist and his or her works might have certain insights about those works that the layperson would not. Let us also see the Dutch painter, van Gogh. When we see his works in the first sight, most of us will have a strange feeling, probably can not understand what his works are talking about. The critic’s criticisms give us a good way to understand his works. By the criticisms, we are personally on the scene that van Gogh is painting before us.

Secondly, a critic’s evaluation of an art work serves as a filter, which helps us determine which art worth our time and attention. The art works are so many in today’s world. Most of them are not worth to see, to read or to listen; actually, not all of them fit us well, even we do not have enough time. The critic’s criticisms are good evaluation for us to choose the most suitable art works. A possible sequence that we are interested in a certain art work is that we see a criticism about it, find it fit our appetite, and then go to see this art work.

In conclusion, the artist and the critics are nice partners. The artist creates arts, the critics explain the arts. Without the critics, the artist’s work can not be well understood. Without the artists, the critics have nothing to comment on. So, something of lasting value is given by both artists and critics.

TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
----------------------------------------------------

This statement asserts that the only artist gives society something of lasting value while the critic not. I do not quite agree with this assertion. In my opinion, both the artist and the critic have great contribution to the society.

It is no doubt that the artist's gives the society something of lasting value. They are creative, ingenious, and erudite. All these above are the difference from the public. They play the role in the society as the scientists do in the scientific areas这句有些莫名其妙,艺术家在社会中象科学家在科学界中一样?
