The most significant events and trends in history were usually made by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.
2.        名人可以代表这个社会群体，名人是其中最突出的，因此对名人的研究是合适的
In most cases, the famous few represents the groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. Accordingly, people pay much attention on famous few individuals in the study of history is appropriate.
3.        在某些时候，名人确确实实决定了重大事件的发展。
The famous people, in the history, sometimes had great influence on the significant events and trends, which could not be accomplished by any others.


TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

I do not agree with the author's opinion that the study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. In my opinion, although the most significant events and trends in history were mainly made by groups of infamous people, the famous few are representative enough for our study on history.

Admittedly, it is the groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten that created the history. Homer is famous for the two great works in Western literature, the Iliad and Odyssey, but the two famous works are not written by him alone. To be more accurate, he did most of work on addition, expurgation and modification of the achievements of others. That is to say, the Iliad and Odyssey is fundamentally built by a group of people. Without these persons, Homer can not leave us the Iliad and Odyssey, and we also lose a lot of materials of ancient Greek which are very important for the study. But unfortunately, the identities of the group of people have long been forgotten, maybe even not be recorded, and it is impossible for us to find out.

However, in most cases, we usually could find one person or several so called the famous few to represent the groups of people that created the history. When we conduct analysis on the revolution early in the 20th century in China, Chairman Mao will naturally be the focus. He is representative enough for our studying. When we study Psychology, the image of Dr. S. Freud puffing his cigar pipe will emerge. When we study some period of history, there is not so much time, energy or money to pay attention to everyone or a large group of people. The most efficient way is to find some representative cases and individuals to focus on.

Moreover, the famous few in the history sometimes had great influence on the significant events and trends. Einstein Albert, the German-born American theoretical physicist special and general theories of relativity revolutionized modern thought on the nature of space and time and formed a theoretical base for the exploitation of atomic energy, has great contribution to modern physics. We can not say the success only relies on Einstein himself; but we could say that without Einstein, the theories of relativity may have not been discovered till now. So although the colleagues of Einstein also do lot for the theories, we should place our emphasis on Einstein.

In conclusion, the study of history places much emphasis on individuals not only because the famous few has great contribution to the significant events and trends in history, but also because this is the most efficient way to study the history.
