TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 504 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-2-1
There is no consensus of opinion among people as to the view of education. A number of individuals maintain that only through meeting the needs of students can be entitled effective education, while some other people take it for granted that it is true that individuals are easier to gain knowledge with interests, still, truly qualified education requires tremendous basic knowledge and certain of intensive mental horizons.
Admittedly, it is education that demonstrates its capacity when it meets the needs of various individuals for the reason that one is, undoubtedly, especially enthusiastic about what he or she is interested, therefore, improve the quality of education. As Marx once said (and I paraphrase), "With interests, students can be transferred from "I should learn" to "I want to learn"." This illustrates the important function that needs and interests demonstrate in the process of education. A case in point, Watt, a prestigious scientist in England, displayed his strong interests in discovering and creating new facilities. Fortunately, thanks to his teacher, who discovered the capacity of little Watt, taught him professional knowledge to meet his needs. Through effort of both of them, Watt invented the engine machine when he is just in his 20s. The successful story cited tells that miracles are most likely to take place when the education suits one's interests and needs.
Nevertheless, being a student, one has the duty to learn certain of basic knowledge, such as math, physics, etc, though disliked by tens of thousands of students. As we know, education cannot be access to effective unless it provides various basic knowledge, which has become fundamental element in pursue of special professional knowledge relevant to students' appetite and taste. If such kind of basic courses are in the absent of classes, any following advanced knowledge will become no avail. How can you believe one make a new machine lacking basic counting ability? In conclusion, those basic knowledge is suitable in most aspects of professional fields and cannot be overlooked, instead, it should put into sufficient emphasis in schools.
Last but not least, it is truly effective education that provides not only courses with basic knowledge, but also transmits democratic values, and widens mental horizons of individuals on campus. In other words, education is in need of courses that relevant to music, art, philosophy, etc. Though those knowledge is seldom used in the day-to-day affairs, still, if one ignores such knowledge, he or she will become a slave of education and does not reach the qualification of modern individual. In the current competitive society, any field of knowledge must be learned, no matter whether is useful to the major or not. In conclusion, wider mental horizons is required by modern education.
Accordingly, without teaching knowledge under students' interests and needs, the process of learning will become extremely dull and disliked by individuals. Without intensive learning and widening students' sight, students are easily becoming narrow foci and lack stable foundation. Thus, it is about time that education stick to its goals and became truly successful. |
