103. "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."


People, who live in the present, always have the impulsion about the future. To study history, however, is to study the past. Given all the demand that press in living in the present and anticipate what is coming yet, why bother with what has been? The study of history contributes a lot through our daily lives, as the author claims. However, the effect of history doesn’t limit on this one point, which have relationships in each field of society.

Just as the author says, history affects our daily lives. When people make important decision, they always remind the history and decide based on the assumption about the recurrence of historical events and patterns. By understanding history, they can handle future recurrence. History, in other word, helps us tell the future. Moreover, history makes up the experience, which could be our assistant as doing the similar job. History molds our minds and broadens our eye sight, which all help us be a better person.

However, the study has multiple values not only related to individuals but to all the society. How can we evaluate war if we live in a peaceful nation, ­­ -unless we use the historical material. How can we understanding the genius who influenced the technology innovation during the past time, -unless we refer to the historical record. History should be studied because it is essential to all individuals and to society, and it harbors the beauty.

In political field, social scientist and government leader tend to formulate the laws and regulate the human being behaviors. They have to refer to the historical recourses to find the proper way to determine how the people act. Major aspects of society events, like elections, military alliances, cannot be set up only depending on the precise experiment. History must serve as our laboratory and library providing data in the past to help us figure out the behavior of our species as it does in social settings. As a famous American writer wrote, “The past causes the present, and so the future.” Every time we want to know about whether a shift in political party dominance or a war happened in the Middle East, -we have to look for factors in the history. Only through study of history can we figure out the way things change. And only through study of history can we know the factors that cause the change.

Besides, history contributes to moral standing. Study of history allows a person to test his or her moral sense. History provides lessons in courage, diligence, constructive protest and inspiration. Studying stories of individuals and society allows a student to test his or her own moral sense and to practice it in the real complex situation. History also inspires people. Children’s learning the history of heroes is the best way to help their mold a healthy personality.

In sum, the reason we study history not only because it relates to our daily lives but our society, the morality of all human being, and so forth. History predicts the future, analyzes the change and builds a moral standing. The use of history is varied. The author’s assertion only limits on one use of the history, and to better understand the all human being and society, we should also focus other use of history.
