38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

In the above statement, author’s view is that reading books nowadays is less important than before as people can learn as much as they can by watching television instead of reading. However, although watching television is an effective way to gain knowledge, people still need to use books to study. Reading books is an integral part for people nowadays.

First, there is so much useful knowledge included in the books. When we were very young, we started to get in touch with books. Look back in the history, the mainly measure for to store information is writing books. So books contain almost entire knowledge what people have known. For example, when I was in high school, I became interested in Napoleon. And then I went to library where there I find many books about Napoleon. After I read it, I know what he had done and what happened during that time. When people take some problem which can’t be solved by others, they surely can find the answer in the library. Books offer so much useful information and become a big deal of treasure for the human. Why don’t we use it well?

Second, despite books are treasures for the human, sometimes that the information it contains can’t be learned only by watching television. We know that we get the information through the pictures which are offered by TV. However, not all the things can be comprehended just by pictures. Take math for example, I think nobody can study math well by watching TV. Math is full of formulas and calculates which are quite abstract. People need to think about them or even exercise in the paper so that they can handle it. But television can not give people the time to think because the pictures are always changing. There is another example, when we read the book ‘Oliver Twist’ or watch the film of the same name. The feeling must be different. When we watch the film, we mainly focus on the scene or the actors. But when we read the book carefully, we will not ignore the detail and comprehend better. Some time, the meaning of the word can’t be given by the picture  As a result, it is impossible that people can use television to replace reading books.

Finally, I must admit that using television is also an important way to learn something. With the development of television, it can offer more and more information than before. When you open the television, it is easily to find what happened over the world, what the weather like in the future, or whether the price of petroleum will rise or not. With the television, we can know every aspect of our daily lives. Nowadays, television is a necessary tool for us to get information to study, to work and to love.

In sum, although television can offer a large amount of knowledge, books still have its own values. Books are human’s great treasure and in many situations, people need to comprehend only through reading books, not television.
