ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

Should the greatness of individuals be decided only by those who live after them or by their contemporaries is a wildly controversial topic that attract many attentions. While it is true that the greatness of some great artists can not be understood by the contemporaries, on the other hand ,however ,the great theory of the scientist of today are accepted easily by many people. Therefore , from my perspective, granted that the importance of the evaluation from the contemporaries, the greatness of individuals should decided by their afterworld.
admittedly, the greatness of individuals can not be appreciated by their contemporaries in large part is due to their outstanding talent and their transcendental intelligence which surpass the common cognition of general public and their peers. Such as many accomplished artists and innovative inventors have been regarded as pagans and get nothing but ridicule at that time, but some of the works and inventions proved to be priceless and have profound effects on the human culture and technology. Gogh, Vincent van's The Sunflower and Starry night was regarded as crazy works and can not be appreciate by the contemporaries. And he was only admitted posthumously as a impressionism master.
Moreover, in the sciences it is difficult to identify greatness without the benefit of historical perspective. Some abstruse notion in sciences can not be proved to be benefit until a long time of experiment and validating in which the thought can be made use of and be completely understood .For instance,the Noble Prize only admit the theory which is braced by amount of experiment and is of benefit to the society.The discovery of tumor virus in chicken by Rous, 66 years later, he was rewarded the Nobel Prize.
However, in some cases great achievement is recognizable immediately, while in other cases it is not .For example, the achievement in the politics play a crucial role in sustaining the stableness of the society. Thus it can be accepted by the citizens immediately who are the basic element of the society. Franklin Roosevelt, an eminent politician and economist, was selected president of the U.S.A. in 1932 because of his outstanding proposition of solution to help the American economy recover form a severe economic depression by means of a series policies called "New Deal" such as relief policies, renascent and catalyzing solutions etc. and afterwards let American get over that crisis.
To sum up, without the evaluation of those who live after them, the greatness may not be so accurate. On the contrary, without the comprehension of the contemporaries, the great individuals may doubt themselves and could not make more contribution to the society. Basing the conclusion on the illustration and expositions mentioned above, accordingly, I hold the position that the evaluation of great individuals should come from the after generations.
