TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them,
not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 378          TIME: 上午 12:45:00          DATE: 2007-3-6

I fundamentally agree the statement that the greatness of individuals could be better measured and valued by the people who live after them, but rather than only by these people. However, there still are many great people whose glorious and splendid contributions are highly acknowledged by today's people around the world, which is becoming the real parts of our history.

As a Chinese old saying, only after sealing a person's coffin could people give him/her a comment. And it is to some extent reasonable that the people who lived after the great individuals could better decide their greatness than the great people's contemporaries. After all, firstly, when we evaluate some statesmen, the consequences and influences of some policies, regulations and laws might exist after many years or decades, especially effects on the environment , the education and the sustainable economic growth.Accordingly, it is really essential for us to suspend our judgement until we see the truth in the end, which would be testified by the history. Secondly, people who live in the same time usually are hard to recognize , judge and value the greatness of other's works or  findings, since most breakthroughs and discoveries are beyond the minds of the people at the same period.

Significantly, Van Gogh, the greatest Holland abstract painter in the world, never sold a single one of his pictures before he died, who passed away in poverty , hunger and despair. Only after he died did people recognize that we lost our genius ,who was the inaugurator of the abstract picture.

Nevertheless, with the rapid progressing society and the quick developing information technology , nowadays the people who are more rational, have more perspectives and more experiences to value
the greatness ,which should be judged and measured for long time before. As we all know, Stephen Hawking , who show us the secret of "Black Hole " in the universe, makes us learn the great truth
of fighting against the destiny and realizing our value. Michael Jordon, who build the great "the Dynasty of Bull" in NBA history, makes us enjoy the spirits of "Never give up "  and " Play with a team ". Bill Gates , who founded the Microsoft, changes our life into the era of personal computer with Windows operation system.

In general, there might be not an absolute answer to who can decide the greatness of individuals, contemporaries or people in the future ? As far as I am concerned, the greatness of individuals relevant to the arts, fundamental scientific researches and governmental policies might be better valued by the people in the future, while people nowadays could decide the greatness of the people with the technology application to some extent.

respondence
1. Bill gates

which should be judged and measured for long time before
应该改成   which formerly should be judged and measured  long time after
