As television become the major media of our era, we spend more and more time on watching TV instead of reading books, however in conclusion we find that one cannot get as much knowledge from TV as from books. That is reason why parents prefer their children reading to watching.

Firstly, the goal of TV business is to attract more audience and make sagging profit; so the TV programs which executives decide to broadcast depend on the very goal. At the moment, what programs can one channel draw on more audiences from the other channels are the facetious and the violent as Friends and Break Prison. What can you learn from these teleplays but not from books? How to dally policemen or how to use a differential equation; how to become humorous or how to get an admission from Harvard University? Obviously, so much knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry and so on which is without advantage of high audience rating cannot be acquired from TV. While you spend so much time on watching TV, books become more important than before, from which you can learn the same knowledge without wasting time on TV in the relative less time.

Secondly, information is more available form books than TV especially when it comes to academic study. As academic study including most abstruse information cannot be comprehended uninterrupted, students need to stop to ponder sometimes. Even if universities take TV instead of books, their students can fix on the very paper of books before but cannot fix the very second of TV program now in class, so the students will lose the chances to really understand the theory which professor need them to know as a basis of the next class. In certain degree, therefore TV impedes upon students’ learning. Also, readers can take note on books when they find something important for future use or can clearly explain the recondite concept from books, but they fail to do that on TV. Compared with less materials supplied by TV, the inconvenience of assimilating information and using knowledge about TV is a more serious threaten to students.

Admittedly, as a new media, TV brings us a new entertainment approach with colors and sounds which is more fetching than books with only letters. After a bald study on books, one would relax oneself by watching TV rather than reading a novel (a book again). TV unfastened our spirits of working at high pressure in a larger extent. However, it is not equal to that we learned as much by watching TV as by reading books because of the superficial knowledge attained by the way of relaxing. Even watching TV for relaxing will take our time which is planed to read books for preparing the upcoming exam. Moreover, most contents of TV program are from books. Can the director Columbus create the movie Harry Potter and the Philosophy’s Stone without reading Rowling’s book. All this might only underscore the emphasis of reading books.

In conclusion, we cannot learn as much from TV as form books and reading books is as important as before especially in school and university. TV can never take the place of books.
