Such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I basically agree that such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits may play a vital role in satisfying human needs, but also could play a negative role in science and society.
To begin with, I would like to give a definition of science and non-mainstream areas of inquiry. Science means systematic study of anything can be examined, tested, and verified. On the other hand, non-mainstream areas are something can not be justified by now. With the development of science, some things once known as non-mainstream can be proved reasonable later s heliocentric model, round world model, and the continental drift. But the most significant difference between science and non-mainstream is that the method to get a conclusion in mainstream is objective, while it is subjective in astrology or something like this.
Admitly, non-mainstream do some positive effect to satisfy human needs. There are so many examples in our society. A man, once was notorious, devoted to charity business by being afraid of the punishments in death. A man, once suffered from cancer, recovered magically by being inspirited from the fortune-tellers. A man, once was unprosperous in his early, succeed in the end by his adamant believe in success from astrology. In these cases, non-mainstream not only satisfies human needs, but also power human to face the unfortunate in life.
However, over-publishing non-mainstream may cumber the development of science. Looking back into our history, religion and belief to imaginary persons or events mainly mastered the society just until the revival of learning happened in Europe. In this period, many achievements discovered by scientific method were rejected, even censured heavily. The knowledge of the world is round was referred by Aristotle in ancient Greek, finally proved by Columbus 2000 years later. The heliocentric model was discovered by Copemicus in 1543, finally accepted by public after two centuries. The unreason belief of the non-mainstream delays such great accomplishments like these several hundred years.
Besides, over-believing non-mainstream may harm to the believer (him or) herself and the society. A man believe of winning a lottery may be distressed by these things never happened in his life. Since non-mainstream can not be verified, the more desire, the more distressed .Moreover, today a few people utilizes the unreason belief of the non-mainstream to achieve their own purposes, most of which are illegal. Some persons feign as fortune-tellers and highly charge for the believer. Some groups claim that they can survive people from dropping to the hell to attract the society and achieve the political ambition. Some of those who are deceived do not recognize the lie even until their death. Such things like this will not only depress the believers, but also offer a hotbed for crimes.
In sum, in my opinion non-mainstream will harm both the science and the society. Non-mainstream areas of inquiry are not based on the things proved to be true, but from person’s only subjective view. This subjective view is mainly disproved and fictive, caused a misunderstanding of ourselves and the real world. |
