TOPIC: ARGUMENT124 - The following is a memo from the business manager of National Daily News.

"To expand the home delivery service of our national newspaper, we should concentrate on the state of Urba rather than on the state of Sylva. First, the population of Sylva is more widely dispersed, which would require us to spend more money to deliver our papers in that area, resulting in less profit per customer. Second, a long-term study of television viewing habits suggests that Sylvans prefer local to national news, since they spend twice as much time viewing local news programs as they do viewing national programs. Finally, because events in Urba receive more coverage in our newspaper than do events in Sylva, we can expect Urbans to be more interested in reading our newspaper."
WORDS: 530          TIME: 0:44:55          DATE: 2007-3-31

In this argument, the author concludes that the National Daily News should concentrate more on the state of Urba than the state of Sylva. However, close canvass of the evidence provided by the author reveals that it accomplishes little toward supporting the author's claim.

To begin with, the mere fact that people in Sylva are dispersed more widely than in Urba does not indicate that Urba should be concentrated more. First, though the population in Sylva is more widely dispersed, the conclusion that more money is needed to deliver the newpaper in Sylva is open to doubt. It is entirely possilbe that other conditions for the newspaper delivery are much better in Sylva than in Urba. For example, perhaps the transportation system is much better in Sylva that every resident can be reached in a convenient way without too much time consuming. Thus, the auhor's conclusion is unconvicing. In addition, given that the money spend on delivering the newspaper is much more in Sylva, the profit gain from them may be larger. As we know that, the profit of a newspaper publisher mainly come from the revenue of the advertisement rather than the sale of the newspaper. Thereby, a possibility is that inhabitants in Sylva are generally richer and the producters view them as their mainly customers, then, if the National Daily News concentrate on this district, oppotunitied for the advertisement will boost and result in the increase of the profit. In short, without ruling out the possibilities, the author cannot justifily draw out a conclusion like this.

Secondly, although residents in Sylvans prefer local to national news on television programs, the claim of the author is still open to doubt. First, the author fails to consider other possilble alternatives for the viewing of television. Such alternatives may include the quality of the program other than the interst of the viewer. Perhaps the local new television programs are much better made than the national ones. In such case, the result of the study is meaningless. Besides, given that residents in Sylva prefer local to national news, the National Daily News still can be successful. Television and newspaper are far from the same. The conclusion of what the audience prefer on televison may not adapt to newspaper. Perhaps the televison show more news with sound and beautiful pictures which make the news of the local more attactive than that of the nation, but when it comes to the newspaper, a media based merely on literary, the reports of the nation will be more popular. If this is the case, the author's conclusion is open to doubt.

Finally, granted that the forgoing assumes are both substantiated, the suggestion is still unwarranted. The situation fo the National Daily News now cannot represent the future.Once they decide that they will concentrate on the state of Sylva, it is possible for them to change their content of the newspaper to meet the need of the larger group of people. In this case, their sales as well as the profit will increase, which leave the claim of the author groundless.

In summary, the reasoning of the author lack sufficient evidence and comprehensive consideration as discussed above.

你那个第一句可以不要了 though the population in Sylva is more widely dispersed, the conclusion that more money is needed to deliver the newpaper in Sylva is open to doubt
第二个body段的TS没写好,似乎没有说到点子上 展开的倒是不错 为啥你每个body段里面又说first..就没有second啊 看上去有点乱
