TOPIC: ARGUMENT174 - The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.

"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially."

In this argument the author reaches the conclusion that preserve all-female education in Grove College (GC) rather than coeducation will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially. The author cites two surveys as example in support of this recommendation. I find this argument logically unconvincing in several respects.

First of all, two surveys cited by the author are not convincing. The statistical evidence cited in the argument is problematic because the respondents' views are not necessarily representative of the views of students and alumni of GC in general. For example, if the surveys has to do with questionnaire, it will make sense that only those who want the school to remain all female would respond to it, thereby distorting the overall picture of the real opinion among students and alumni in GC. Without knowing how the survey was conducted, it is impossible to assess whether or not this is the case.

Second, even grant that the surveys are believable, the author conclude too hastily that keeping the college all-female will improve morale among student and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially. For one thing, for the students, there is no evidence to show that all-female education will improve morale among student. Maybe coeducation is more efficient in improving morale of students because male is something novelty to the students in GC. And it could make the students adapt to the society more quickly, after all, male and female are concomitance in our society. For another, the alumni of GC, the college should compare the income of new enroll of male students and the loss of supporting of alumni, coeducation may bring more money to the college. And the author also gives no information to demonstrate that the alumni will support the college like before even if keep the college all-female. Perhaps the reason the alumni do not support the college is not coeducation but others like dissatisfied with using of their money. The author's failure to investigate or even consider these possibilities renders the conclusion based on it highly suspect.

In sum, the author fails to validate the conclusion that keeping GC all-female will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep financial supporting. To make it logically acceptable, the author should demonstrate the reliability of the surveys. In addition, the author would have to provide more concrete evidence to support the conclusion.

不知道为什么格式总不对啊!

感觉基本没有什么大问题了 多注意些细节 并让论证更充分些!
