130"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

Does children's socialization today determine the destiny of society? According to the speaker, not only the society's future depends on how children are socialized today, but also we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society. I strongly disagree with this view in that there are still more pivotal factors that influence the destiny of society. In addition, empirical experience indicates that in some senses our children have already created a better society.

To begin with, consider the speaker’s first proposition. It is true that socialization proves to be an important aspect of children's development. That is the reason why one of the ultimate goals of education turns to be to learn to get together, that is to socialize. As cooperation being increasingly emphasized in modern society, an unsociable individual can hardly accomplish success since the complex tasks often require collaborative endeavor of a group of people. Children have to learn how to negotiate, how to share, and how to assert themselves in a regardful way, all of which cannot be taught merely by books or parents but through the process of dealing with peers. The characters they are designed to learn from socialization, such as equality, contribution, charity, serve as basis upon which society prospers.

Nevertheless, even though children's socialization today place profound influence on future society, there are still other aspects that determine the destiny of society. One of the compelling arguments is the development of science and technology. A great number of extant problems that impede society’s advancement can only be solved by innovative technology. Consider, for example, the limited energy resource on earth is not able to adapt increasing demand of human beings. Scientists predict that the earth can only afford humans less than a thousand years unless we explore new energy resource. Now many countries begin to turn from petroleum to re-generated energy such as solar energy and wind energy, nonetheless, nonetheless, how to utilize them efficient in order to meet our huge demand is the chief problem calling for solution by advanced technology. Another familiar example is environmental problems brought by industrialization. Over emphasis on short-term interests such as economic development not only runs out of next generation’s belongings but also confronts ourselves with deteriorative environment. The greenhouse effect caused by release of exhaust melts the iceberg in Antarctic and leads to ascending sea levels as a consequence which threaten people living near the sea. In addition, the depletion of atmospheric ozone layers increases human being’s risk of certain severe diseases like cancers and leukemia. Whether human beings are able to find ways out of these dilemmas largely determine the future of society.

Then take into account the speaker’s next contention on building a better society. In my observation, if the definition of a better society refers to one featured by greater tolerance towards different views or eccentric people, greater confirmation of personal right and freedom, or greater cooperation across cultural an national boundaries, then our children of the most recent half century have already established a better society. In current society, people’s freedom of thought and speech has been protected by relevant laws and constitution. Modern society allows more freedom for its members to make choices on their own. Some behaviors that used to be reckoned as aberrant, such as homosexual relationship, have gradually been legally permitted in most countries. Besides, a great deal of detrimental tradition has been abolished--for example, the discrimination on women and certain ethnics--to ensure individual right and equality of all society members. What is more, different nations collaborate for the progress of society as a whole. For example, scientists of various nationalities devote themselves on the research of human genes in order to overcome fetal diseases like AIDS for the survival of all humans. Simply put, the speaker’s second contention is not able to comply with empirical experience.

To sum up, while I concede the importance of children’s socialization in the future society, it can hardly be considered as the most essential factor, not to mention determinant, to the destiny of society. Other facets, such as technologic progress in solving extant urgent social problems, prove to be even pivotal. In the final analysis, in certain senses we have already lived in a better society brought up by children of the latest half century.
